San Diego Section Soccer : Hargrove Puts Valhalla in Final

Freshman forward Scott Hargrove scored early in the first half Wednesday night to give Valhalla High School a 1-0 victory over Hilltop in the boys’ soccer 3-A semifinals at Grossmont High.

Hargrove took a pass from sophomore Derek Wiersma on the left wing, just six yards from the goal, and scored in the game’s 16th minute. Valhalla (18-3-1) had another chance to add to its lead one minute later, but Hargrove missed an open goal.

Valhalla’s goalie Brad Leahy made nine saves and recorded his 10th shutout of the season.

The Norsemen will play top-seeded Bonita Vista in the finals 7:30 p.m. Friday at San Diego High. The two teams scrimmaged earlier in the season.

“I told my team at that time,” Valhalla coach George Logan said, “that if we made it to the finals, that’s the team we’d met. They are a very good team and it should be a very, very close game.”

In the boys’ 2-A semifinals:

La Jolla 1, University City 0--The Vikings’ (19-2-2) Victor Zendayes, playing his first game as a midfielder, scored on a corner kick 10 minutes into the second half to give La Jolla the victory at Mount Miguel High. Chris Bear took the corner kick, but his kick fell short of Zendayes, who was running for the far post. Lucas Martin centered the ball to Zendayes, who scored.

La Jolla will play the winner of today’s Ramona-San Marcos game in the 2-A finals at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at San Diego High. In the 3-A girl’s semifinals:

Poway 2, Serra 1--Lisa Apple scored on a pass from Kirby Seale late in the second half to lift the Titans into Friday’s championship game against Bonita Vista. Poway trailed 1-0 at halftime before tying the game midway through the second half on a goal by Charry Korgel. Apple’s game-winner, from the left side of the goal, came minutes later. Now, Poway will meet Bonita Vista, a team it defeated, 4-3, in overtime, earlier this season.

In the 2-A girl’s semfinals:

University 2, Southwest 1--University moved into the 2-A championship game against San Pasqual with its victory over the Raiders. Felicia Faro’s goal early in the second half was the game winner. Jackie Santos scored 20 seconds into the game to give University a 1-0 lead, but Southwest tied the scored near the end of the first half on a goal Diane Schofield.
