Community College State Tournament : San Francisco City Escapes With 53-52 Victory Over L.A. Harbor

San Francisco City College escaped being upset by Los Angeles Harbor Thursday night, but not by much.

The Rams defeated the Seahawks, 53-52 in the quarterfinal round of the State Community College basketball tournament at Cerritos Colege.

Troy Berry made two free throws with eight seconds left to extend the San Francisco City lead to 53-51. Teammate Keith Dobbs broke a 50-50 tie a minute earlier with a free throw.

L.A. Harbor, which already upset top-ranked Cerritos on the way to the quarterfinals, had a chance to take the lead but Kyle Lundy (12 points) missed two free throws with 12 seconds left.

The Seahawks took a 28-21 lead at the half. The Rams finally caught L.A. Harbor at 48-48 with four minutes left.

San Francisco plays Santa Barbara at 8:30 tonight in the semifinals. L.A. Harbor ends the season at 21-12.

In other tournament action:

Los Angeles Southwest 77, Skyline 76 (OT)--The Cougars won their 14th straight as sophomore guard Bruce Chew scored the only point in overtime.

The Trojans (24-7) had two chances to tie the game, but David Peed and Michael Alexander each missed free throws in the final 50 seconds.

After taking a 76-71 lead with 2:22 left in regulation, the Cougars rallied to tie, 76-76. Guard Charles Webb stole the ball at midcourt and made a 10-foot jump shot to tie it with 54 seconds left.

The Cougers (27-4) play Sacramento in tonight’s first semifinal game at 6:30 p.m.

Santa Barbara City 62, Contra Costa 46--The Vaqueros made 15 of 16 free throws in the last five minutes to stop the Comets’ comeback. Guard Reynold Baly scored a team-high 16 points and teammate Kevin Stevenson scored 12 points and had 5 rebounds for Santa Barbara.

Sacramento 91, Pasadena City 89--Sophomore Rhodney Moore made a 15-foot baseline jump shot at the buzzer to beat the Lancers. The winning shot came after Danny Scott missed a free throw with eight seconds left that would have given Pasadena (23-11) the lead. Guard Ken Drummond, who led the Panthers (25-7) with 28 points, gave up a shot from the right corner of the key and passed the ball to Moore for the game-winning assist. Moore had 14 points. Lancer guard John Clark was the game’s leading scorer with 32 points.
