Re-Evaluation of Layoffs Sought

Physical education instructors requested a re-evaluation of their proposed layoffs at the regular meeting of the Los Angeles Community College District Board of Trustees on Wednesday.

The board is not expected to act immediately on the request, said district spokesman Norm Schneider.

Of the 143 full-time junior college faculty members who are expected to be laid off, 39 are physical education instructors. As an alternative, they have asked the district to reduce staff through interdisciplinary transfers and retirements over two years.

Two CSUN Players Ineligible

Juniors Tom Brandt and Pierce Rodnunsky, reserve infielders on the Cal State Northridge baseball team, have been declared ineligible for the remainder of the Division II season because they participated in a Pierce College alumni game.

The players must also forfeit a year of college eligibility.

Northridge Coach Terry Craven dismissed the players in accordance with an NCAA rule prohibiting any university athlete from taking part in outside competition.

Brandt, a second baseman, appeared in four games, batting .429. Rodnunsky, a shortstop, played in five games and was batting .545.

Trivia Time

Who’s the only coach in the NCAA basketball tournament’s round of 16 with a connection to Pierce College?

It’s Denny Crum, coach of Louisville. Before Crum became an assistant coach at UCLA in 1967, he was head coach at Pierce for four seasons.

Although records for those seasons are unavailable at the college, a Pierce spokesman estimated Crum’s record at 90-25.
