COLLEGE SPRING HIGHLIGHTS : Coley’s Grand Slam in 9th Leads Mission to 7-5 Win

James Coley hit a grand slam with one out in the bottom of the ninth to give Mission College a dramatic 7-5 victory Friday over Antelope Valley in a Mountain Valley Conference baseball game at Valley College.

Coley, a freshman from Monroe High, was 3 for 6 with five runs batted in.

Mission began the rally with one out in the ninth when Johnny Chung singled and Roy Mijeres walked.

Center fielder Pete Harper singled in Chung, then Dave Mendoza walked to load the bases.

Coley came up and hit a 2-and-1 pitch for his first home run of the season.

Mike Hansen pitched his first complete game of the season to improve his record to 2-0. He struck out six and walked two.

Mission (2-3, 1-2) left 16 men on base.

Ventura 4, Moorpark 3--Anthony Espitia’s two-run single in the seventh inning provided the margin of victory in a Western State Conference game at Moorpark.

Moorpark pitcher Bob Ayrault retired Ventura’s first two batters in the seventh. He allowed the next three batters to reach base, however, and then Espitia hit a ground single to left field to give Ventura a 4-1 lead.

Moorpark (2-2, 6-6) narrowed the gap with two runs on four consecutive singles in the eighth. The rally ended when pinch hitter Tom LeGassick grounded out with runners on first and second. Ventura is 4-0 and 7-3.

Valley 12, West L.A. 7--Chris Haslock hit three doubles and a home run and had five RBIs to lead the Monarchs to the Mountain Valley Conference win at West Los Angeles.

Dan Telles (3-2) of Valley allowed three runs and struck out six in eight innings. West L.A. scored four runs in the ninth off reliever Pete Sinclares.

Volleyball

Pierce def. LaVerne, 15-4, 15-8, 15-8--Setter Tony Rusen sparked Pierce’s offense, and was responsible for much of the scoring. Bobby Samuelson had 11 kills and three blocks, while teammate Michele Podesta added seven kills and one block for Pierce. Joe Sorensen had six kills and three blocks.

Pierce, 7-0 in the Southern California Volleyball League, increased its undefeated streak to 14 games.
