CSUN Volleyball Team Beats Chapman

The Cal State Northridge men’s volleyball team proved Friday night why it belongs in the most powerful league in the country, the California Intercollegiate Volleyball Assn.

The Matadors played Chapman, an independent, at home. But it looked as if CSUN had taken on a struggling high school team as the Panthers were embarrassed, 15-1, 15-12, 15-9, in a nonconference match that lasted just 55 minutes.

Jim Meaney, still recovering from a shoulder injury, had 11 kills and Tom Ribarich led consistent CSUN serving with an impressive jump-serve. CSUN Coach John Price was able to empty nearly his entire bench by the third game.

CSUN improved its overall record to 10-14 while Chapman fell to 9-21.

Scott Juhl served a seven-point run and three aces in the first game to give CSUN an 8-0 jump on the Panthers. The Matadors were trailing, 12-7, in the second game when John Buffington served one of his three non-returnable serves to start a five-point run that tied the score. Buffington and Mike Bird, the only starters that played the whole match, each brought in 12 kills.
