Roundup : Synder’s Homer Keeps Capo Valley on a Roll

Brett Snyder hit a two-run home run in the top of the seventh inning Wednesday to lift Capistrano Valley High School to a 5-4 win over Dana Hills in a South Coast League game played on the Dolphins’ field at Dana Point.

Snyder also pitched a complete-game six-hitter with nine strikeouts. The Cougars have won seven straight and are 2-1 in league, 9-4 overall. Dana Hills drops to 1-1 and 6-6.

The Dolphins took a 3-0 lead in the second inning on Greg Erickson’s three-run homer, but Capistrano Valley cut the lead in the fourth on Scott Stark’s two-out, two-run double. Tommy Adams’ sacrifice fly in the fifth made it 3-3, but the Dolphins scored on an error to go ahead, 4-3, in the sixth.

In other South Coast League games:

Laguna Hills 5, El Toro 0--Winning pitcher Wayne Helm (4-2) allowed three hits and struck out nine en route to his fourth shutout of the season. Helm’s RBI single in the first inning provided Laguna Hills (1-1, 9-6) with its first run. The Hawks scored three runs in that inning. Hawks catcher Sean Hardy hit a solo homer in the fourth, his first this season, over the left-center field fence. Laguna Hills had nine hits.

Irvine 2, San Clemente 1--Bobby Hamelin’s two-run home run in the top of the fourth inning at San Clemente gave the Vaqueros the margin of victory. Eddie Lipplie picked up the win for the Vaqueros. Irvine (3-0, 10-6-1) plays host to Capistrano Valley Friday. San Clemente fell to 0-3 and 4-9.

In the Garden Grove League:

La Quinta 3, Santiago 2--Troy Paulsen knocked in the winning run with two out in the bottom of the seventh inning at La Quinta. The Aztecs broke a 2-2 tie when Paulsen singled in Tim Park from second base. Paulsen went 2 for 3 with two RBIs. He had the Aztecs’ only two hits. Sophomore Mike Wilson (3-1) picked up the win. La Quinta (1-3, 9-6) plays host to Los Amigos Friday. Santiago fell to 2-2 and 7-5.

Garden Grove 5, Los Amigos 2--Don Lookman hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning at Los Amigos help the Argonauts come from behind for the victory. Down 2-1, Lookman’s shot put the Argonauts ahead for good at 3-2. Jeff Kanagae was 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored for the Argonauts. Mark Kiefer (2-0) picked up the win. Los Amigos (0-4, 2-10) is at La Quinta Friday. Garden Grove raised its record to 4-0 and 7-3.

Bolsa Grande 9, Rancho Alamitos 2--Chris Tapia went 3 for 4 with two doubles and three RBIs to lead the Matadors at Rancho Alamitos. Robbie Walker added two hits for the Matadors. Mike Valdez (2-1) picked up the win. Bolsa Grande (3-1, 6-5) is at Garden Grove Friday. Rancho Alamitos fell to 2-2 and 5-6.

In the Freeway League:

Troy 3, Sunny Hills 0--David St. Clair’s two-run home run in the fourth inning powered the Warriors to the win at Sunny Hills. Troy (2-2, 4-4) plays host to Buena Park Friday. Sunny Hills (2-3, 4-7) is at Fullerton.

Fullerton 14, La Habra 8--The Indians pounded out 16 hits at Fullerton to help pitcher Dean Strong raise his record to 6-1. Chuck Weatherspoon homered for the Highlanders. Fullerton (3-1, 10-2) plays host to Sunny Hills Friday. La Habra fell to 2-2 and 4-7.

Sonora 24, Buena Park 0--David Bird threw a one-hitter and struck out 12 to lead the Raiders at Buena Park. Ron Lesperance went 4 for 5, including two triples and a home run, to lead the Raider attack. Sonora raised its record to 4-0 and 13-1. Buena Park fell to 1-6 and 4-4.

In the Empire League:

Esperanza 10, Pacifica 1--Tim McNeal threw a one-hitter over six innings to help the Aztecs at Esperanza. Kevin Clancy went 2 for 2, scored twice, and stole three bases to lead the Aztec attack. Emmitt Cohick went 3 for 4 with two RBIs and Tim McNeal homered for the Aztecs. Esperanza (3-0, 10-1-1) is at El Dorado Friday. Pacifica fell to 0-2-1 and 5-8-1.

Katella 7, Kennedy 6 (8 innings)--David Lewis walked with the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth inning to drive in the winning run at Katella. The score was tied, 6-6, at the end of seven innings. Todd Lloyd went 2 for 3 and scored three runs to lead Katella. Oscar DeChavez also had two hits for the Knights. Kevin Shaw (5-1) picked up the win. Katella (3-0, 10-4) is at Loara Friday. Kennedy fell to 1-2 and 4-8-2.

El Dorado 6, Loara 3--Scott Petredes went 2 for 3, including a two-run homer in the fifth inning, to lead the Golden Hawks at El Dorado. Scott Holcomb picked up the win for the Golden Hawks, who raised their record to 2-1 and 10-3. Loara (1-1-1 and 11-2-1) meets Katella at Boysen Park Friday. El Dorado plays host to Esperanza.

Los Alamitos 11, Cypress 7--The Griffins defeated the Centurions at Cypress to raise their record to 1-2 and 10-5. Cypress fell to 0-3 and 9-6.

In the Orange League:

Valencia 9, Brea-Olinda 5--The Tigers (2-2, 6-4) scored three runs in the fourth inning and four in the sixth inning to win at home. Jeff Martinez (3-2) went all the way for the Tigers, allowing eight hits and striking out eight. Martinez also went 2 for 4 at the plate, including a three-run homer in the fourth inning. Valencia’s Brett Gregory went 2 for 2 and was on base four times.

Western 4, Savanna 2--David Tellers hit a two-run triple in the sixth inning to break a 2-2 tie and put the Pioneers ahead for good at Glover Stadium. Tellers (5-1) also picked up the win, pitching a complete game, striking out seven and allowing only five hits. Savanna fell to 2-2 and 3-5.

Magnolia 21, Anaheim 1--Carl Holmes had four hits and four RBIs and Kirk Hainline added three hits and three RBIs to lead the Sentinels at Magnolia. The Sentinels raised their record to 2-2 and 6-3. Anaheim fell to 1-3 and 4-9.

In the Sunset League:

Ocean View 3, Huntington Beach 2--The Seahawks rallied for three runs in the sixth inning to overtake the Oilers at Mile Square Park. Down 2-0 with two men on base, the Seahawks’ Coly McClendon tripled and Bill Daymude followed with a sacrifice fly to provide the margin of victory. David Holdridge (4-0) went the distance, striking out nine. Ocean View (2-1-1 and 8-4-1) is at Westminster Saturday. Huntington Beach (1-2, 6-7) plays host to Fountain Valley.

Marina 8, Westminster 4--The Vikings defeated the Lions in a game at Marina to raise their record to 2-2 and 6-7. Westminster fell to 2-2 and 8-3.
