HIGH SCHOOL SPRING HIGHLIGHTS : Kruzner Goes 4 for 4 to Lead L.A. Baptist, 15-5

Four L.A. Baptist High softball players combined for 13 hits to lead an easy 15-5 win over L.A. Lutheran in an Alpha League game Thursday.

Angela Kruzner was 4 for 4, while teammates Connie Broussard, Michelle Ruffner and Karyn Redekopp each had three hits for L.A. Baptist.

L.A. Baptist improved to 3-0 in league, 5-4 overall. L.A. Lutheran fell to 2-1 and 5-6.

Mickey Lehmkuhl hit a three-run homer for L.A. Lutheran and Margaret Archer was 3 for 3.

Village Christian 12, Marshall Fundamental 2--Mary Thomas went 4 for 4 and had three RBIs to lead Village Christian’s 15-hit attack. The victory improved Village Christian to 7-2 overall and 4-0 in the Alpha League.

Taft 7, Van Nuys 6--Lisa Barfield hit a sacrifice fly with no one out in the bottom of the seventh to drive in Kelli Lennon and give Taft the nonleague victory.

Barfield’s run-scoring sacrifice fly capped a three-run seventh that began with Van Nuys leading, 6-4. Bridget Davis hit a solo homer for Taft (1-1) in the fourth, and pitcher Sue Risdon allowed only four hits and picked up the victory.

Sylmar 7, Cleveland 0--Renee Phillips hit a three-run homer in the fifth to spark Sylmar (4-0) to a nonleague victory. Pitcher Deanna Monroy struck out six to improve her record to 4-0.

El Camino Real 10, Chatsworth 2--Junior Darci Stehlik hit a grand slam, and El Camino Real, the defending City champion, took advantage of 13 Chatsworth errors to win the West Valley League game.

Newbury Park 1, Thousand Oaks 0--Pitcher Debbie Dickmann (4-2) threw a four-hit shutout to lead Newbury Park in the Marmonte League contest. Stacy Frydenberg scored Newbury Park’s only run in the third, when she singled and eventually scored on an error. Newbury Park is 9-3 overall 3-0 in league. Thousand Oaks fell to 2-2 in league.

Track

Simi Valley 97, Newbury Park 29--Simi Valley won 12 events and ran its record under Coach Doni Green to 59-1 since 1979. Simi Valley is 2-0 in the Marmonte League; Newbury Park dropped to 0-2.

Simi Valley (girls) 68 1/2, Newbury Park 49 1/2--Newbury Park’s girls got closer than the boys track team but still came up short in the Marmonte League meet. Simi Valley won eight events; Newbury Park won six.

Simi Valley is 2-0 in league; Newbury Park is 1-1.

Thousand Oaks (girls) 100, Channel Islands 18--Thousand Oaks improved its Marmonte League record to 2-0 with an easy win at Channel Islands. Junior Sharon Manship led Thousand Oaks, winning two individual events and running a leg on the Lancers’ victorious 440-relay team. Manship won the long jump (17-1 1/2) and the 330 low hurdles (46.7).

Volleyball

Harvard def. North Torrance, 16-14, 15-5, 11-15, 8-15, 15-5--Harvard took first place in the Ocean League with the win. John Phelps led Harvard with 41 kills off the setting of Chris Abbott.

Harvard, which visits Centennial on Tuesday, is 7-1 in league. North Torrance dropped to 6-2.
