Loyola Outmuscles USD Twice for Sweep

The University of San Diego’s doubleheader loss to Loyola Marymount Saturday began as it ended--with home runs keying big innings for Loyola.

The Lions (10-1, 27-6), ranked fifth in the nation, jumped to a 6-0 lead in the opening game on two homers in the first inning and went on to win, 12-1. Loyola added three homers in the ninth inning of the nightcap for a 16-6 victory over the Toreros (2-10, 18-16-2) in West Coast Athletic Conference play.

In the first game, Billy Bean started things off for Loyola with a two-run homer in the first inning. Later in the inning, Jim Bruske hit a three-run shot off losing USD pitcher Dan Newman (4-5). Loyola’s Chris Donnels added a three-run home run in the fifth. Jeff Goettsch (5-1) got the win for the Lions.

After Loyola ran up another big first inning in the second game to lead 4-0, USD’s Chuck Graham tied the game, 4-4, with a grand slam. The Lions regained the lead in the second, however, and were leading, 11-6, going into the ninth.
