Orange County Prep Baseball : Detrick’s Two-Run Hit Leads Huntington Beach

Jim Detrick’s two-run single snapped a 3-3 tie in the sixth inning Saturday to give Huntington Beach High School a 6-3 win over Fountain Valley in a Sunset League baseball game at Huntington Beach.

Huntington Beach scored a run in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game before Detrick’s hit won it an inning later. Jeff Haack (4-2) came on in relief in the sixth inning to get the win for the Oilers (2-3, 7-7). Jim Doyle had a solo home run for Fountain Valley (3-1-1, 10-3-1) in the fifth.

In other Sunset League action:

Ocean View 10, Westminster 5--The Seahawks scored four runs in both the fifth and six innings to win at Westminster. The game was marred by the ejection of several Ocean View players. Ocean View Coach Bill Gibbons said five of his players were ejected “for a variety of reasons, some of which were questionable and dubious.”

In the Sea View League:

Estancia 6, Newport Harbor 5--The Eagles scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, including two on Conrad Colby’s double, and held on for the win at Estancia. Newport Harbor scored three runs in the seventh but stranded the tying run at third base.

In Loara Tournament action:

Los Alamitos 12, Magnolia 6--The Griffins scored seven times in the bottom of the sixth after two outs to win the third-place game at Los Alamitos. Greg Pirkl, a sophomore making his first varsity appearence, pitched the final two innings to earn the win. John Hainline was 3 for 4 with a single, double and a home run for Magnolia (6-5).

In the Redondo Beach Tournament:

Compton 4, Loara 3--Compton scored four runs in the first inning and held on for the quarterfinal win at Redondo High School. Brian Roberts was 2 for 4 with two doubles for Loara (11-4-1).

In nonleague action:

Laguna Beach 10, South Hills 6--Mark McDonald’s sixth-inning grand slam gave the Artists the win at South Hills. McDonald was 2 for 4 with five RBIs for Laguna Beach (6-4). Kent Chesley had three hits and Tommy Trager and Danny Lane had two each as the Artists collected 13 hits.

In Academy League action:

Avalon 21, Newport Christian 1--Lawrence Hernandez was 4 for 5 with three runs and two RBIs to lead the Lancers at Avalon.
