Orange County Prep Baseball : Dunn’s 12th-Inning Single Carries Marina, 3-2

Billy Dunn’s 12th-inning RBI single capped a two-run rally that gave Marina High School a 4-3 Sunset League win over Fountain Valley Saturday at Marina.

Marina (4-3, 8-8) went into the 12th trailing, 3-2. Fountain Valley (3-3-1, 11-5-1) had taken the lead on Frank Spaan’s RBI single.

Keith Laszlo began Marina’s 12th with a single to center. Ricky VandeReit followed with another single, and Matt Hattabaugh walked to load the bases. Shortstop Mike Huyler singled to right to drive in Laszlo and tie the score at 3-3. Dunn followed with his game-winning hit.

Laszlo was 4 for 5, VandeReit was 3 for 6 with one RBI and one run scored, and Huyler was 3 for 5 with one RBI.

Winning pitcher Todd Destatte (1-0) pitched two-thirds of inning for the win. Marina pitcher Danny Jensen went 11 innings but received a no decision.

In other Sunset League games:

Westminster 5, Huntington Beach 3--The Lions (3-4, 10-5) trailed until the sixth when they scored three runs, two on a bases-loaded double by David Turner. Winning pitcher Ryan Klesko (4-1) pitched six innings, allowing six hits and striking out four. Huntington Beach is 3-4 in league, 8-8 overall.

In the Angelus League:

Mater Dei 5, St. Paul 4 (eight inings)--Larry Sutton’s sacrifice fly in the eighth scored Eric Weight and gave the Monarchs (3-4, 9-5) a win at St Paul. Mater Dei trailed, 4-3, going into the sixth inning, but a bases-loaded sacrifice by pinch-hitter Tony Copeland scored Rich Huntington to tie the score. Monarch catcher Mike Kelly was 2 for 2 with two walks and a home run. Winning pitcher Mike McCarthy (4-1) threw a complete game, allowing eight hits and striking out six.

Servite 4, Bishop Montgomery 0--Chris Ulmer and Todd Cook combined for a four-hitter at Servite. Ulmer (2-0) earned the win, giving up the four hits in four innings. A junior, Ulmer has pitched 18 innings without allowing a run. Mike Robertson was 2 for 2 with a homer for the Friars (6-1, 9-4) Bishop Montgomery is 2-4 in league, 3-5 overall.

In the South Coast League:

Mission Viejo 3, El Toro 0--The Diablos (4-0, 13-2) got only three hits but defeated the Chargers (1-4, 8-11) at El Toro. Three Mission Viejo pitchers--Kyle Abbott, Matt Lackie and Jack Bailey--combined on the shutout. Abbott (3-2) went the first four innings. Mission Viejo turned a triple play in the fifth inning.

In the Academy League:

Avalon 5, California Lutheran 2--The Lancers (8-0, 10-0) took advantage of eight C-Hawk errors to win at Tustin. California Lutheran is 2-3 in league, 2-3 overall.

In the Palos Verdes tournament:

Alemany 5, Loara 2--Despite Brian Roberts’ fifth home run of the season, the Saxons (12-6-1) lost to the Indians in a fifth-place consolation game. Loara committed three errors.
