Newhall’s Lyon Wins at Saugus Opener

Bob Lyon of Newhall scooted to the lead on the 25th lap and then held on to win the modified division Saturday night in Saugus Speedway’s opener.

Lyon raced to the lead after Charlie Saied’s car spun coming out of the fourth turn, 15 laps from the finish line in the 40-lap race. John Covan of Simi Valley finished second in the race. Ray Hooper Jr. of Valencia placed third.

Perhaps the most determined effort was displayed by defending modified champion Kenny Sapper of La Crescenta. After a wreck on the 11th lap, the cars were restarted with Sapper in last place in the field of 24 cars. He picked his way through the field to end up sixth.
