City Defeats CIF, 98-96, at Long Beach

Zlatko Josic of San Pedro hit two free throws with 13 seconds remaining and Cleveland’s Trevor Wilson then blocked a dunk attempt by Elden Campbell of Inglewood Morningside with two seconds to go as the City scored a 98-96 win over the Southern Section in a prep basketball all-star game Sunday night at Cal State Long Beach.

The Southern Section, which got a team-high 12 points from Campbell, led for most of the first half. But the City came back with a 22-13 run in the last 7 1/2 minutes before halftime to take control.

It increased the margin to 21, 73-52, by outscoring the Southern Section, 13-0, during one 3 1/2-minute stretch. Then, it was the Southern Section’s turn for a big rally, as DePaul-bound Kevin Holland of Cerritos scored four straight baskets to make it 79-76.

Crenshaw forward Ronald Caldwell led all scorers with 22 points.

In the girls’ game, the Southern Section got 15 points from Pauline Jordan of Pasadena Muir, 13 from Leslie Carpenter of Ventura Buena and 12 from Julie King of Cerritos Gahr to beat the City, 75-59.

Fremont’s Linda Broomfield led the City with 14 and Demetrice Davis of Fairfax added 10.

Dion Brown of Crenshaw, using a 360-degree dunk in his final attempt, won the slam-dunk exhibition. Santa Monica’s Keith Harris represented the Southern Section in the final round.
