Quartz Hill High established itself as the baseball team to beat in the Golden League with a 13-7 victory Tuesday over Saugus.
The Rebels improved their record to 7-1 in league and 10-2 overall, and are one game ahead of the 6-2 Centurions.
Scott Weiss led the Rebels’ 12-hit attack, going 3 for 3, including a two-run home run in the fourth inning. He also walked twice and scored four times.
Quartz Hill’s Mike Craft (5-0) was the winning pitcher in relief of his brother, Chris, despite giving up a grand slam in the fourth to Chris Joy.
The Rebels jumped out to a 7-0 lead by the fourth inning, knocking Don Pedersen, the first of three Saugus pitchers, out of the box.
Saugus scored seven runs in the bottom of the fourth on only one hit, the blast by Joy. Five Centurions walked, and two errors were committed by Quartz Hill.
The Rebels rebounded with one run in the sixth and five in the seventh to put away Saugus. Craig Leonard’s three-run homer in the seventh iced the game for Quartz Hill.
