Orange County Roundup : 5th Laguna Beach 10K Set for April 27

The fifth Laguna Beach 10K Run will be held on April 27 starting at 8 a.m. This year’s race will be run on a TAC-certified course which starts in downtown Laguna Beach and goes through the village area of the city, to Laguna Canyon Road and back to Ocean Avenue.

Edwin Moses will be on hand for the start of the race. The pre-registration fee is $7, which includes a shirt. Day of the race registration will cost $12. For more information call 494-6811.

Eugenio Juarez has been named women’s soccer coach at UC Irvine. Juarez, a graduate of Irvine, has been the girl’s soccer coach at Estancia High School the last three seasons. She was named the Orange County and Southern Section Coach of the Year in 1985.

Southern California College’s Ken Bardsley, a senior forward who averaged 18.6 points per game this season, has become the first Vanguard basketball player to earn NAIA Academic All-American honors.

Bardsley, a business management major, has a 3.67 grade-point average from classes.

Only 15 players from more than 500 NAIA schools receive Academic All-American honors.

Cal State Fullerton has announced the signing of four softball players and two volleyball players to national letters of intent.

Softball players signed were: outfielder-first baseman Melissa Coombs of Arcadia High; outfielder-second baseman Mich DeBree of La Habra; outfielder Carey Hess of Loara; and pitcher Janis Okerlund of El Toro.

Dionne Powers, a middle blocker from Edison, and Susan Herman, an outside hitter from Sonora have signed to play volleyball for the Titans. The 6-foot, 2-inch Powers is expected to start as a freshman.

Registration for the American Roundup Corp. girls’ spring basketball league will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday in the Orange High School gymnasium. The fee is $55, including a T-shirt and jersey.

The league is open to girls from eighth to 12th grade. The seven-week league begins on April 26. For further information, call Ed Graham at 533-1887.

Mater Dei High School will host a charity golf tournament that will benefit the Monarchs’ sports programs on Monday, April 28 at the Newport Bay Country Club.
