Prep Roundup : Rowe Leads Saddleback to 5-3 Win

Jeff Rowe pitched a four-hitter Tuesday to help Saddleback High School defeat Estancia, 5-3, in a Sea View League game at Costa Mesa.

The victory keeps the Roadrunners (9-3-1 in league, 13-9-1 overall) in first place, a half-game ahead of University. Saddleback has clinched a playoff berth and can win the league championship by defeating Corona del Mar on Thursday.

Estancia (8-5, 10-12) scored on John Baker’s two-run home run in the first inning, but the Roadrunners came back with four runs in the fourth, including Neil Carter’s RBI triple to tie the score, 2-2. Carter had three hits.

In other Sea View League action:

University 12, Woodbridge 4--Jeff Baker hit a two-run homer and had an RBI triple to lead the Trojans (9-4, 11-9) past the Warriors (4-9) at University High. The Trojans moved into second place.

Laguna Beach 7, Newport Harbor 6 (nine innings)--Tommy Trager led off the bottom of the ninth with a double and Todd Rose singled him home with the game-winning hit to lift the Artists (8-5, 12-7) over the Sailors (5-8) at Newport Beach.

Corona del Mar 11, Costa Mesa 0--Right-hander Robert Hess threw a four-hitter and went 3 for 4 with an RBI triple to help the Sea Kings (6-6-1, 10-10-1).

In Empire League action:

Esperanza 5, Katella 1--Tim MacNeil pitched a three-hitter and drove in two runs with a single in the fourth inning at Boysen Park to help the Aztecs (12-1, 20-2-1) clinch their third straight league title. The victory was the 200th of Coach Mike Curran’s career and his 100th at Esperanza.

Curran, in his sixth year at Esperanza, is 100-45-2 with the Aztecs and 200-81-3 overall. He previously coached at St. Paul.

Loara 15, Kennedy 3--Curt Henson went 2 for 4 with a triple and an RBI and Brian Malavar had a double and two RBIs to lead the Saxons at Cypress College. Loara remains a half-game ahead of Los Alamitos in third place.

The Saxons play first-place Esperanza Friday and Los Alamitos plays second-place El Dorado.

Los Alamitos 4, Pacifica 1--Matt Treece went 3 for 3 with two RBIs and senior right-hander Randy Hacker threw a three-hitter to lead the Griffins (7-6, 17-9) over the Mariners (3-9-1, 8-13-1) at Pacifica.

El Dorado 11, Cypress 6--Starting pitcher Jeff Petredes (4-1) went six innings to gain the win and drove in three runs with two hits at Cypress High. Petredes struck out two and walked eight.

In Sunset League action:

Fountain Valley 2, Edison 1--Cal Davis hit a bases-loaded single with two out in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift the Barons (6-7-1, 13-9-1)past the Chargers at Mile Square Park.

The fourth-place Barons, defending Southern Section 4-A champions, will play third-place Huntington Beach Saturday for a playoff berth.

Ocean View 6, Huntington Beach 0--The Seahawks (11-2-1, 16-4-1) scored four runs in the first inning on two-run singles by Eric Christopherson and Mike Abascal to help beat the Oilers (7-7, 12-11) at Huntington Beach High.

Westminster 10, Marina 4--David Turner had four hits and three RBIs, and Steve Gulley added three hits and an RBI to help the Lions defeat the Vikings at Marina High. Westminster (8-6, 15-7) clinched second place and a playoff spot with the win. Marina dropped to 5-9 and 9-14.

In Angelus League action:

Bishop Amat 1, Servite 0--Brian Kelly stopped the Friars (10-4, 14-7) on three hits at Bishop Amat to put the Lancers (10-4, 15-6) in a tie with Servite for first in the Angelus League.

In Olympic League action:

Orange Lutheran 14, Maranatha 3--Chris Hunt had four singles and drove in three runs to lead the Lancers (8-5, 11-10) over Maranatha (9-4) at home.

Southern California Christian 7, Capistrano Valley Christian 5--Juan Arce led off the top of the seventh inning with a triple, and the Flames (3-10, 5-12) scored three runs to break a 4-4 tie on their way to the win at Capistrano Valley Christian.
