Southern Section Tennis : Mission Viejo Beats Sunny Hills, 12-6

Mission Viejo High School, a wild-card entry in the CIF Southern Section 3-A tennis playoffs, won all nine singles sets Tuesday in a 12-6 victory over Sunny Hills in a first-round match at the Sunny Hills Racquet Club in Fullerton.

Gary Pearne, Brad Mosley and Dean Shepherd each won three singles matches for the Diablos, third-place finishers in the South Coast League. Mission Viejo (13-7) will play Corona in Friday’s second round.

The Diablos’ victory marked the second straight year in which Mission Viejo had upset the Freeway League champion in the first round. Last year, the Diablos eliminated Fullerton.

In other 3-A action:

Mater Dei 10, Los Amigos 8--The Monarchs’ No. 1 doubles team of Pat Harnett and Tim Page won three sets, including one that reached a tiebreaker (7-6), to help Mater Dei eliminate the Garden Grove League-champion Lobos at Los Amigos High.

No. 2 singles players Dax Peterson beat Bill Pham, 6-4, to give Mater Dei (16-3) its ninth point. The Monarchs will lay Burbank in the second round. The Lobos finished the season 18-3.

Capistrano Valley 13, John W. North 5--Blake Denison and Jamil Atcha each swept three singles sets, and the team of Steve Sprinkle and Alaric Jura won three doubles sets to help the Cougars (16-2) at John W. North High.

Sonora 12, El Dorado 6--Benson Curb, Jim Lambrose and Steve Campbell each won three singles matches to help the Raiders (14-6) defeat the Golden Hawks (14-6) at El Dorado High. Sonora will play Capistrano Valley in the second round.

Dana Hills 18, Bolsa Grande 0--The No. 1 doubles team of Jeff Merideth and Andy Taylor won three sets, each by the score of 6-0, to help the second-seeded Dolphins at Dana Hills High. The Dolphins (15-3) will play Claremont in the second round.

Los Alamitos 18, Hemet 0--Three singles players--Joaquin Garcia, Shubert Koong and Kit Codik--each swept three sets without losing a game for the third-seeded Griffins at Los Alamitos High. The Griffins (21-0) will play La Quinta in the second round.

In 4-A action:

Villa Park 10, San Gorgonio 8--With the score tied, 8-8, singles players Jeff Copeland and Brian Johanson each won sets to lift the Spartans at Villa Park High. The doubles team of Dave Lehman and Brent Sumrall also won three sets for the Spartans. Villa Park will play Edison in the second round.

University 16, Fountain Valley 2--No. 1 singles player Carsten Hoffman won three sets, 6-1, 6-2, 6-1, and the No. 1 doubles team of Paul Corkery and Mike Hirt won three sets, 6-2, 6-1, 6-2, to help the Trojans at University High. The Trojans (15-4-1) will play Thousand Oaks in the second round.

Foothill 17, Long Beach Poly 1--No. 1 singles player Doug Eisenman won three sets, each by the score of 6-0, and No. 2 singles player Dan Turbow won three sets, 6-0, 6-1, 6-0, to lead the Knights to an easy victory at Foothill High. The Knights (19-2) will meet Buena in the second round.

Corona del Mar 18, Long Beach Millikan 0--Mike Briggs, the Sea Kings’ No. 1 singles player, swept three sets to help Corona del Mar at home. The Sea Kings (15-6) will play third-seeded Palos Verdes in the second round.

In 2-A action:

Valencia 16, John Glenn 2--No. 1 singles player Carl Flint won three sets, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, and No. 2 Pat Yu won three sets, 6-0, 6-0, 6-1, to lead the Tigers at Valencia High. The Orange League-champion Tigers (17-4) will play Baldwin Park in the second round.
