BRIEFLY : Collins Resigns to Escape Layoff

Tim Collins, who just completed his first season as baseball coach at Pierce College, resigned Wednesday, Athletic Director Bob O’Connor said.

The resignation was really a formality. As a part-time coach in the Los Angeles Community College District, Collins would have been out of a job June 30.

The district has authorized the layoffs of 48 full-time instructors, including 13 in physical education. Collins and 22 other part-time coaches figured to lose their jobs.

Lovullo Named to All-Pacific 10 Team

UCLA second baseman Torey Lovullo was among four former Times All-Valley baseball players to be named to the All-Pacific 10 Southern Division team last week.

Lovullo, a junior who led Montclair Prep to Southern Section Small Schools championships in 1981 and 1982, was selected as the conference’s co-most valuable player.

Lovullo batted .323 with 16 home runs and 65 runs batted in for the Bruins, who are ranked fourth in the nation by Baseball America magazine. He has 27 career home runs, third in UCLA history.

Teammate Todd Zeile, a junior catcher from Hart High, was also named to the team. He batted .346 with 13 home runs and 43 RBIs.

Other first-team selections included Jack McDowell and Toi Cook of Stanford.

McDowell, a sophomore pitcher from Notre Dame High, was 10-4 and had a 2.69 earned-run average for the Cardinal.

Cook, a junior outfielder who played with Lovullo at Montclair Prep, batted .335 and had 37 stolen bases.

Canyons Ranked No. 1 in Final Poll

College of the Canyons, which won its sixth straight conference baseball championship, is ranked No. 1 in the final Southland Poll by sports information directors.

Canyons, which posted a 33-5 record and beat out Valley College for the Mountain Valley Conference championship, has won 11 conference titles and two state championships in the last 17 years. The Cougars, who lost to Cerritos last season in the state championship game, open the state regionals on Saturday against Harbor (28-11) in a 1 p.m. game at Canyons.
