San Diego Track Roundup : El Capitan’s Boggess Sets Personal Best in the Discus

Share

Four of the best prep track athletes in the state--and in two cases, the nation--competed in the Grossmont League finals Friday at Monte Vista High School.

But with little to motivate them except pride, the quartet--El Capitan’s Brian Boggess, Mount Miguel’s Jackie Anderson, Grossmont’s Darcy Arreola and Valhalla’s Mark Dani--combined to produce only one San Diego County or personal best.

Having little competition was nothing new for Boggess. The senior has been the county leader in the discus and the shotput all year by a wide margin. Boggess is also the state leader in the shot with a personal best of 60-feet 1 1/2-inch, and is second in the state in the discus, with a previous best of 183-9.

Friday, Boggess bettered his previous best in the discus, throwing 183-11 on his final toss. Boggess won the shot by nearly 10 feet with a throw of 59-8 1/2, his third best attempt of the year.

Anderson, a junior, won two events, but with marks below her best.

Anderson jumped 41- 1/2 in the triple jump at the Michelob Invitational Feb. 23, the second best in the nation this year. Her best jump outdoors is 40-3.

Anderson’s best effort Friday was 38-5 1/2, coming on her final attempt. Anderson appeared to be well behind the board on all of her attempts, and didn’t have much speed on her approaches. Still, she beat Grossmont freshman LaFrania West, who jumped 37-2, by more than a foot.

Anderson is also the county leader by two inches in the high jump, with a best of 5-8. Anderson and Jennifer Clinger of El Capitan each cleared 5-4, but Anderson won the competition because she had fewer misses.

Mount Miguel teammate Nichelle Strachan, who has leaped 19-4, defeated Anderson in the long jump. Strachan jumped 18-1 to set a meet record. Anderson was second at 17-11.

Arreola is the national leader in both the 800 (2:10.0) and 1,500 meters (4:28.29) and is the county leader in the two-mile (10:36.0). Arreola won the 880 yards by 60 yards with a time of 2:12.9. Arreola won the mile with a time of 4:56.8. Tammy Kniffing of El Capitan was second at 5:25.8.

Dani ran a national indoor record at the Michelob Invitational of 8:49.1. He didn’t come anywhere near that mark Friday, running a 9:07.5. Robbie Lopes of Monte Vista was second at 9:38.9.

Monte Vista’s Erik Peterson was the San Diego Section champion last year in the high jump with a leap of 6-7. Peterson cleared 6-7 to win the high jump, but it was below his best of 6-8 1/2.

Peterson tried to break the league record of 6-9, but failed to clear three times at 6-9 1/2. Matt Farmer of Monte Vista and Mike Tapley of El Capitan were second at 6-4.

Ron Young of Mount Miguel won the two sprints with meet records. Young ran a fast 10.7 on the dirt track to win the 100 meters, and won the 220 in 22.3.
