Montclair Prep 11, Mary Star of the Sea 0--Scott Randall pitched a three-hit shutout and catcher Frank Charles hit a two-run homer to cap a four-run first inning and lead Montclair Prep over Mary Star of the Sea.

Randall, 8-1, struck out five and walked only one batter while not allowing a baserunner past second base. “If he can stay this way throughout the playoffs, we have an excellent chance of advancing,” said Mountie Coach Jeff Pressman. “He did a sensational job and is becoming a fine pitcher for us.”

Darrell Handlesman went 3 for 3 with two doubles and a run batted in and Scott Hauser contributed a two-run double to ignite a five-run fifth inning for the Mounties as each member of the starting lineup contributed at least one hit.

Montclair Prep, 21-3 and ranked No. 1 in the Southern Section 1-A, started things off with a two-out rally in the bottom of the first. John Quick and Jeff Light each had singles and Handlesman had a ground-rule double before the Stars’ Art Lopez balked in the second run. Charles followed with his seventh home run of the season and Randall was able to cruise the rest of the way.

Lopez allowed 15 hits before being relieved with one out in the bottom of the sixth by Mike Vittlich.

Montclair Prep will play Carpinteria in the second round of the Southern Section 1-A playoffs Tuesday.
