Montclair 9, Agoura 5--Despite a two-run homer by Jon DeGennaro, Agoura saw a 4-0 fourth-inning lead quickly vanish when Montclair’s Joe Cabrao (2 for 3, six RBIs) hit a grand slam in the bottom of the inning in the Southern Section 2-A second-round playoff game.

Frontier League champion Agoura got another run on an error to retake the lead in the sixth, but Montclair scored five runs in the bottom of that inning.

Montclair pitchers Derek Parks and Doug Pierce teamed up to allow only six hits, while striking out seven. Agoura finished the season at 15-5 overall.

Providence 15, Coleville 1--Providence, the top-seeded school in the Southern Section Small Schools Division, scored nine runs in the first three innnings to advance to the quarterfinals against Villanova Prep, a 6-4 winner over Coast Union. Senior Kevin Miller pitched a perfect game through the first five innings while his teammates built up a 15-run lead. He finished with a two-hitter.

Tony Ross had four hits, including two doubles, and two RBIs to pace Providence’s 17-hit attack. Jim Recker doubled and homered, and Adam Grant had two doubles, a single, and three RBIs.

Birmingham 17, Van Nuys 2--Every starter in the Birmingham lineup got at least one hit as the Braves combined for 19 in the Mid-Valley League game. Birmingham’s Kevin Zietz was 3 for 4 with two doubles, three RBIs and a run scored while teammate Jordan Cook was 3 for 5 with an RBI and three runs scored.

Cook (5-3) was the winning pitcher, allowing six hits and striking out six.

Birmingham is 8-7 in league (13-7 overall), while Van Nuys dropped to 2-13.

Kennedy 6, Monroe 2--The Mid-Valley League game was tied 2-2 going into the fifth inning when Todd Davis hit a two-run homer to spark Kennedy.

Kennedy’s Kevin Farlow was 2 for 3 with two RBIs, while winning pitcher Jaime Ponce raised his record to 5-0. Kennedy is 8-7 in league, while Monroe dropped to 5-10.

Grant 6, Hollywood 0--Senior right-hander Don Hussey (7-3) tossed a one-hitter to lead Grant past winless Hollywood in the East Valley League game.

Sophomore catcher Matt Roberts had a solo homer in his first varsity start. Sean Pettway was 2 for 3 with an RBI and Dan Karpin was 2 for 3 with two RBIs.

Grant (14-3, 15-5) clinched at least a tie for the league title and can win the championship outright with a victory Thursday over Verdugo Hills.

North Hollywood 9, Verdugo Hills 1--Danny Bateman had a grand slam, and Mike Wells (3 for 3) hit a two-run triple to lead North Hollywood in a six-run fifth inning that assured victory in the East Valley League game. Steve Bernstein was 2 for 2 and added a run and an RBI for North Hollywood in its final game of the season.

Poly 7, Fairfax 0--Poly never took the field as Fairfax forfeited the East Valley League game because of a fight with Sylmar last Thursday.

Canoga Park 3, Reseda 2--Reseda had a 2-1 lead going into the bottom of the sixth, but Adam Schulhofer led off the inning with a base hit--his 23rd in 15 regular-season games--which broke a school record that had stood for 10 years.

Two batters later, Schulhofer scored on an RBI single by Mike Urman to tie it. Then Reseda pitcher Steve Brody did the damage to himself, walking home Mickey Snook for the winning run after Bryan Littlefield had a bunt single to load the bases.

Canoga Park, which finishes the season in second behind Chatsworth, is 10-5 in the West Valley League (11-7 overall). Reseda dropped to 8-7 in league.

Cleveland 11, Chatsworth 8--Bob LaRosa was 2 for 4 with a home run, double and four RBIs, while teammate Bill Watson was 2 for 4 with two RBIs to lead Cleveland to the West Valley League upset win over first-place Chatsworth.

Chatsworth, 11-4 in league, got offense from Rob Roseboro (4 for 4, two RBIs) and Sal Barrocas (3 for 4 with three RBIs).

Cleveland improved its record to 5-10 in league and 5-12 overall.

High School Softball

El Camino Real 29, Poly 0--Sophomore Beth Silverman pitched a one-hit shutout and El Camino Real scored 12 runs in the first inning of its first-round playoff victory. The Conquistadores play the winner of today’s Chatsworth-Narbonne game in the second round of the City 4-A softball playoffs.

Silverman has been the winning pitcher in each of El Camino Real’s 16 wins. The Conquistadores have won 52 straight games, a state record.

Silverman preserved her shutout when Poly runners were thrown out at home in the third and the fifth innings.

“I want to get to the 19th game (the City 4-A final),” said Silverman, who wears No. 19. “That’s my lucky number.”

Poly pitchers Renny Ondejko and Ana Perez gave up 12 walks and 18 hits in five innings. Poly also committed nine errors. Elaine Pabled had the Parrots’ only hit, a third-inning single.
