Orange County Roundup : Cal State Fullerton Signs 9 Baseball Prospects

Six community college and three high school baseball players have signed letters of intent to attend Cal State Fullerton next year, the school announced.

All-South Coast Conference selections Mark Baca (outfielder, Cypress College), Rob DeYoung (pitcher, Fullerton College), Keith Kaub (first baseman, Golden West College) and Longo Garcia (pitcher, Orange Coast College) head the list of community college players recruited by Titan Coach Augie Garrido. Outfielder Bobby Jones of Sacramento City College and shortstop Mike Ross of Fresno City College have also signed with Fullerton.

The prep players signed are Mark Beck, a pitcher from Mayfair High School; John Becker, an infielder from Arroyo, and Kevin Dean, an outfielder from Hogan High of Vallejo.

The Vince Ferragamo Special Olympics celebrity golf tournament will be held Tuesday at the Los Coyotes Country Club in Buena Park.

Ferragamo and former Ram teammates Eric Dickerson, Jackie Slater, Irv Pankey, Nolan Cromwell, David Hill, Jack Youngblood, Doug France and Bill Bain are expected to participate in the charity event. The tournament will be followed by a luau and a performance of the Tiare Polynesian Show.

Entry fee for the tournament and luau is $200. Tickets for the luau and show are available for a donation of $50. For further information, call 962-3662 or 963-6735.

George Raveling, USC basketball coach, will be the featured speaker at the Irvine Exchange Club’s awards banquet tonight at the Irvine Marriott. The banquet honors the top scholar-athletes from Irvine, University and Woodbridge high schools and UC Irvine and Irvine Valley College.

The banquet begins at 7. Tickets, which cost $25 for adults and $15 for students, may be purchased at any of the three high schools. For further information, contact Dan Lesley at 476-3175 or Bill Howard at 476-1084.

The Newport Mesa Alumni track and field meet, featuring graduates of Corona del Mar, Newport Harbor, Estancia and Costa Mesa high schools, will be held Saturday at Davidson Field in Newport Beach.

Entry fee is $10 for an unlimited number of events. Field events begin at 10 a.m., with running events scheduled to begin at noon. All proceeds will be given to the track and field teams of the four Newport Mesa district schools.

A special 5K run, to benefit the cross-country teams of the four schools, will begin at 8 a.m. at Irvine Avenue and 16th Street. Graduates of the 1950s, ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s will compete in divisions for men and women.

Around The Area Donny Daniels, a former player and part-time assistant coach at Cal State Fullerton, has been appointed a full-time assistant by Titan basketball Coach George McQuarn. Daniels will fill the position formerly held by Ed Goorjian, who will assist on a part-time basis next season. . . . Former Mater Dei High School football and track athlete Kevin Higgins has become the first three-time Rugby Collegiate All-American selection. Higgins played outside center at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and played on a U.S. national team that competed in South Africa in April. . . . Cal State Fullerton catcher John Eccles has been named to the All-NCAA District VIII team. Eccles led the Titans with 13 home runs and 81 RBIs. He hit .362 and set a school record with 29 doubles in 57 games.
