BRIEFLY : Radinsky, Murphy Honored

Pitcher Scott Radinsky and outfielder-pitcher Shaun Murphy of Simi Valley High have been named Ventura County co-players of the year. Simi Valley Coach Mike Scyphers was named coach of the year.

Murphy batted .441, had six saves and posted a 2-0 record with a 1.46 earned-run average. Radinsky was 11-1 with a 1.09 ERA. Another Simi Valley pitcher, Todd Sullivan (8-2), was named to the first team. Other Simi Valley players on the first team were Mike Hankins (.429), Dave Milstien (.393) and Corey Aurand (.481).

Pitcher Travis Willis (9-3) and infielder Ken Sirak (.397) of Camarillo were selected to the first team. Westlake placed catcher Jim Henderson (.390) on the first team. Heath DeLaTorre (.408), Sean Luft (.394) and Phil Maquinalez of Rio Mesa were also selected to the first team.

All-State Softball Team Named

Sophomore outfielder Judy Fitzgerald and freshman pitcher Karen Mead of the Moorpark College softball team have been named to the all-state team, sponsored by the California Community College Softball Assn.

Fitzgerald, from Thousand Oaks High, set five school records this season, helping Moorpark to a 26-10 mark and a second-place finish in the Western State Conference. She batted .367 with 39 hits, 35 runs scored, 6 doubles and 36 stolen bases, all school records. Fitzgerald, the WSC’s most valuable player this year, also set school career records for batting average (.328), hits (66) and stolen bases (55).

Mead, from Cabrillo High, was 18-5 with an 0.51 earned-run average. She pitched 2 no-hitters, had 8 shutouts and set a school record by throwing 26 consecutive scoreless innings. In 135 innings, she struck out 177, another school record.

59 High Schools Cited

Providence, First Lutheran, Newbury Park, and St. Genevieve will be among 59 high schools honored by the Southern Section and Adohr Farms for positive sportsmanship during the 1985-86 season.

A representative from each school will accept a “Shake for Sportsmanship” award at Dodger Stadium June 7 as a prelude to the Dodgers’ game with the Houston Astros.
