Steve Scott and Patti Sue Plummer each set world records for a 5,000-meter road race in the Carlsbad 5000.
Scott, the American mile record-holder, outkicked Kenya’s Peter Koech in the final 300 meters to win in a time of 13:31.9. That bettered the pending world record of 13:56 set two weeks ago by Ed Eyestone in Utah.
Plummer, a former Stanford track star, held off New Zealand’s Ann Audain to win the women’s race in 15:30.2, breaking the former record of 16:09 held by American Betty Springs.
