The Ventura County high school all-star basketball games will be played June 27 at Ventura High. The girls game begins at 6:30 p.m. and the boys play at 8 p.m.

Thousand Oaks High Coach Ed Chevalier will lead the boys South team against a North team coached by Marc Groff of St. Bonaventure. The girls South team, coached by Kevin Pasky of La Reina, will face a North team coached by Rio Mesa’s George Valenzuela and Santa Clara’s Tom McConville.

Leading the boys South team will be Marmonte League players Mitch Parrott and Mike Biggs of Camarillo, Tom Neumayr of Thousand Oaks, Brent Tapia of Royal, Mark Schlegel of Newbury Park and Todd Johnson of Simi Valley. Representing the Frontier League will be Jon Perlstein of Calabasas and Donnie Rea of Agoura. Danny Cronk of Moorpark, Drew Friedman of Oak Park and Jonathan Doering of Simi Lutheran are also on the squad.

Jerry Dawson, Jerry Walker and Garrett Worden of Rio Mesa lead the North team.

Nigel Miguel, formerly of Notre Dame High in Sherman Oaks and UCLA, has been invited to the Los Angeles Lakers rookie camp that begins Monday at Loyola Marymount in Westchester. Miguel, a 6-6 guard-forward, averaged 17.5 points per game last season in the Continental Basketball Assn.

Kevin Holmes, a 6-8 forward out of Cleveland High, was drafted on the fifth round of the National Basketball Assn. draft on Tuesday by the Philadelphia 76ers. Holmes, a 6-8 forward who played college basketball at DePaul, was the 113th player selected.

Billy Reed, a former All-City basketball player at North Hollywood, has been named basketball coach at Sylmar, replacing Ed Presley.

Darrin Beer, a pitcher from College of the Canyons, was named pitcher of the week in the semipro Golden State League after throwing a three-hit shutout for the San Fernando Valley Dodgers in a 6-0 victory over the South Coast Metros of Irvine on Saturday. Beer struck out seven and walked none. Teammate Sean Collins, an outfielder from Santa Monica College, was 8 for 9 during a four-game sweep of the Metros to earn co-player of the week honors. He hit two home runs and has hit safely in seven straight at-bats.

Two teams from the San Fernando Valley-based Southern California Volleyball Club will leave Saturday for the Junior National Tournament in St. Paul, Minn., June 22-27.

Beth Welch of Thousand Oaks High, Cheryl Conely (Montclair Prep), Jolene Clemens (Agoura), Amy Adler (Agoura), Dana Simone (Westlake) and Lura Braden (Royal) are among those that will compete for the club’s 17-and-under team.

Following the junior nationals, the two teams will join 11 others from the SCVC to compete with more than 200 teams from around the country in the Volleyball Festival June 29-July 3 at UC Davis.
