Former Syracuse University basketball player Tony Bruin, 25, was sentenced to a five-year probation and 500 hours of community service after being convicted on a cocaine charge.

A star player at Mater Christi High School in Queens, N.Y., Bruin was a tri-captain at Syracuse for two years through the 1982-83 season. He was drafted by the Philadelphia 76ers but was cut and then played in Europe before returning home.

Meanwhile, in Fresno, wide receiver Tony Woodruff, who had signed a free-agent contract with the San Francisco 49ers for next season, has been charged with possessing cocaine. Woodruff, who played with the Philadelphia Eagles after being drafted in the ninth round in 1982, and two others pleaded innocent at their arraignment in Fresno Municipal Court and will have a preliminary hearing Sept. 16.
