Mater Dei Heads Tournament Field Friday at Servite

Orange County’s premier summer basketball tournament, the eighth Boeges-Avia Summer Tournament at Servite High School, opens at 9 a.m. Friday in the Friars’ gym in Anaheim.

The 16-team tournament features defending Southern Section 5-A division champion Mater Dei and Oregon’s top team, Corvallis High. Top county schools entered include Ocean View, Santa Ana and Marina.

Santa Ana won the Lake Tahoe team tournament last weekend, winning seven consecutive games against teams from Washington, Oregon and California. The Saints defeated Lakewood in the title game.

Two sons of former NBA players will play in the tournament. John Carty, a 6-foot 9-inch center for Corvallis, is the son of former Laker Jay Carty. LeRon Ellis, a 6-10 center for Mater Dei, is the son of former Laker LeRoy Ellis.

Other top players scheduled to play include Mark Georgeson (Marina), Ryan Blossey (Los Alamitos), Kevin Rembert (Mater Dei), Ricky Butler (Ocean View), Anthony Jenkins (Pius X), Bobby Joyce (Santa Ana) and David Whitmore (St. Bernard).

Defending champion Cleveland High is not entered this year, but three-time winner Long Beach Poly is scheduled to play. The championship game is set for 7:30 p.m. Sunday.

The first-round pairings:

9 a.m.--Ocean View vs. St. Bernard; 10:30--L.B. Millikan vs. Los Alamitos; Noon--Pius X vs. Santa Ana; 1:30 p.m.--Corvallis vs. Mater Dei; 3--Dominguez vs. Rolling Hills; 4:30--Marina vs. Verbum Dei; 6--Fountain Valley vs. L.B. Poly; 7:30--Crespi vs. Servite.
