Malibu PSAA Surfing : Capistrano Beach’s Hogan Advances Through Unseeded Heats to Win Title

Jim Hogan of Capistrano Beach won the $5,000 Trim Malibu Classic Sunday at Second Point Beach before an estimated crowd of 10,000.

Hogan, one of 96 unseeded surfers in the event, advanced through four qualifying heats Friday and Saturday to make the finals, where he won $1,500 for winning the title.

Todd Martin of Encinitas was second ($700), Dino Andino of San Clemente third ($500) and Jamie Brisak of Santa Monica fourth ($300).

Andy Fomenko of San Clemente and Rich Collins of Costa Mesa finished tied for fifth ($250 apiece), and Mike Baron of Huntington Beach tied for ninth ($150).

Brian McNulty of Capistrano Beach, the top-seeded surfer in the Professional Surfing Assn. of America, was eliminated in the first heat of the morning.

In the body board division, Ben Severson of Hawaii won $500 for winning the title. Kavan Okamura was second ($350) and Keith Sasaki third ($250).

The final stop of the PSAA tour will be Aug. 1-3 in Huntington Beach.
