Junior Olympics : Water Polo : Costa Mesa’s Aquatics Team Wins the Gold

The Costa Mesa High School aquatics water polo 15-and-under team won a gold medal in 20th Annual National Junior Olympics Friday in St. Louis.

Costa Mesa came from behind to defeat Tustin, 11-10, in the championship game. Tustin led, 10-8, with 1:20 to play but after tying the score at 10-10, Shane Coons scored the winning goal with two seconds left.

In the overall standings of the round-robin tournament, Concord was second, Clovis third and Tustin fourth.

Two Orange County members of the Trojans water polo team were selected as All-Americans in the 17-and-under competition.

Greg Olson of Sonora High School and goalie Mike Day of Sunny Hills were selected to the top team. Day will attend UC Santa Barbara in the fall and Olson returns to Sunny Hills.

The Trojans, who represented USC, tied tied Beach, which represents Wilson High School in Long Beach, with a 4-0-2 record in the round-robin tournament. The teams agreed to have a five goal shootoff to decide the gold medal. Beach won the shootoff, 4-3.
