Coach Changes Careers

Former Long Beach resident Jim DeGraffenreid and Chris Kostman of Berkeley will try to break the speed record of 23 hours and 47 minutes for tandem bicycling from San Francisco to Los Angeles this weekend. DeGraffenreid, 24, who now lives in Midway City, finished 12th in the recent bicycle Race Across AMerica finishing the 3,107-mile route from Huntington Beach to Atlantic City, N.J., in 12 days, 20 hours and 31 minutes. DeGraffenreid finished despite a recommendation by doctors that he drop out after he became severely dehydrated in Arizona.
