A fire that briefly threatened the condor sanctuary at Griffith Park Zoo was fully controlled after blackening 35 acres of brushland near Travel Town, between Zoo Drive and Griffith Park Drive. Zoo spokeswoman Lora LaMarca said the blaze burned within 1,000 yards of the area where the California condors, an endangered species, are protected for breeding in captivity, and zoo employees were standing by to move the animals if the fire broke through the line. But 26 companies of Los Angeles city firefighters supported by five water-dropping helicopters contained and then controlled the blaze in less than two hours.
