NFL Exhibition Roundup : Kemp Rallies 49ers to 21-10 Win

Jeff Kemp threw two touchdown passes to wide receiver Jerry Rice late in the second period to wipe out a 10-point Seattle lead Friday night at San Francisco, and the 49ers ended the NFL exhibition season with a 21-10 victory over the Seahawks.

Kemp, who split the 49ers’ quarterback duties with Mike Moroski, was 9 for 10 passing on the drives, which covered 72 and 59 yards. Rice caught 6 passes for 83 yards in the first half. His touchdowns came on plays of 14 yards and 1 yard.

Joe Montana, scheduled to start at quarterback for the 49ers in the Sept. 7 regular-season opener at Tampa Bay, was in uniform Friday night and took part in pregame passing drills. He played in only one exhibition game before spraining an ankle.

The 49ers also scored on fullback Tom Rathman’s six-yard run early in the fourth period.

Both teams finished with 2-2 exhibition records.

San Diego 24, St. Louis 17--Reserve quarterback Tom Flick, shaking off a pair of first-half interceptions, threw a 68-yard touchdown pass to Buford McGee in the fourth quarter at San Diego to lift the Chargers to victory.

The Chargers finished with a 3-1 exhibition record. The Cardinals wound up 2-3.

San Diego starting quarterback Dan Fouts left after the first quarter. He completed 6 of 12 passes for 94 yards.

St. Louis’ Neil Lomax appeared only in the first offensive series, during which he was sacked, threw an incompletion and handed off for a running play.

He was replaced early by Rick McIvor after suffering a slight sprain of the right knee and ankle.

Miami 21, Tampa Bay 3--Dan Marino completed 14 of 18 passes for 201 yards and a touchdown to lead the Dolphins over the Buccaneers at Miami.

Miami (2-2) finished with two straight exhibition victories. The Buccaneers finished 0-4.

Rookie James Pruitt scored on a 21-yard pass from Marino, who played the first half before giving way to Don Strock.

It was Marino’s best outing of the exhibition season. He had thrown only 23 passes before Friday night.

Washington 29, Atlanta 21--Dean Hamel forced a safety, and Doug Williams hit Anthony Jones with a seven-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter at Washington to lift the Redskins to their third straight exhibition victory.

Washington finished the exhibition season with a 3-1 record; Atlanta was 2-2.

Williams completed 5 of 9 passes for 47 yards, while starter Jay Schroeder, playing the first three quarters, completed 15 of 30 for 186 yards.

Atlanta’s David Archer, who suffered a shoulder injury late in the game and did not return, completed 5 of 11 passes for 128 yards and 1 touchdown. His backup, Turk Schonert, completed 20 of 32 passes for 202 yards but was intercepted twice.

Detroit 30, Cincinnati 20--Scott Williams scored on a one-yard run with 13 seconds remaining, and nose tackle Eric Williams returned a fumble 29 yards for a touchdown on the final play as the Lions overtook the Bengals at Cincinnati.

The Lions, who trailed, 20-9, going into the final period, scored three touchdowns in the final 5:13 to finish with a 2-2 exhibition record. Cincinnati wound up 1-3.
