San Diego Summer Prep Update : Vacations Aren’t Over for Three County Schools

Share

The coming of a new prep football season means the end of summer vacation, but at three county schools, the suitcases are just now being packed.

Fallbrook and Morse high schools will open their seasons in Hawaii, and Sweetwater will travel to Mexico City for its first game.

Sweetwater will play Mexico City High at 6 p.m. on Sept. 4.

Fallbrook Coach Tom Pack, whose team will meet Maui High on Sept. 5, said the stress will be on fun.

“We want them to have a good time and a good experience that they will never forget,” he said. “There is also a goal--to win the football game.”

Morse will play Kona Pauli High on Sept. 5.

Fallbrook raised money for its trip by helping to build a house. Only members from last year’s Warrior team and those who contributed 15 hours of work will make the trip.

Pack said 178 people, including parents, players and students as well as the school’s varsity volleyball team--which will play in three tournaments around the islands--will leave Monday and spend six days in Hawaii.

Moving up: Terry Rogers, The Times’ San Diego Back of the Year and the county’s career rushing leader from Sweetwater High, advanced from fifth to fourth string I-back at Nebraska, but the Cornhuskers probably wish he hadn’t.

The spot opened up when senior Doug DuBose, the school’s sixth all-time leading rusher, was lost for the season following reconstructive surgery on his left knee.

The move may allow Rogers to remain with the varsity squad instead of playing on the freshman team.
