SAN DIEGO HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL : Roundup : Serra Interceptions Seal Victory : Five of Ramirez’s Passes Picked Off in 27-6 Win Over San Diego

Serra High School’s defense intercepted five passes from San Diego High quarterback Armando Ramirez, to cruise to a 27-6 season-opening victory Friday night at Balboa Stadium.

Inside linebacker Troy Jurgens had two interceptions, returning one for an 18-yard touchdown in the second period, to seal the win for Serra.

Serra running back Brock Hobson paced the offense, rushing for touchdowns of 11 and 2 yards.

San Diego’s only score was a 10-yard pass from Ramirez to James Taylor in the second period.

In other nonleague games:

University 23, Carlsbad 5--University rushed for 214 yards at Carlsbad, breaking open a 9-3 halftime lead with touchdowns in the third and fourth quarters. Brian Wilson kicked a 25-yard field goal for Carlsbad.

Coronado 21, Mar Vista 14--Coronado scored three times on the ground, including a touchdown run with three minutes remaining, for the win at Coronado. Coronado held a 14-0 lead at the half. Mar Vista challenged in the fourth period, after running back Gonzalo Quintero scored from the five to tie the game, 14-14.

Kearny 13, El Capitan 0--Hoochie Osborne scored on a 10-yard touchdown pass from Scott Welish in the third quarter to seal the win. Kearny went ahead in the first quarter on a 15-yard touchdown run by Eric Mercado.

Monte Vista 13, Mira Mesa 7--Quarterback Richard Garmo completed 12 of 26 passes, 2 for touchdowns, to lead Monte Vista to a comeback win over visiting Mira Mesa. Trailing 7-6 in the third period, Monte Vista took the lead when Garmo hit Halifu Johnson on a 5-yard scoring toss and Jeff McKay added the extra point. In the first quarter, Garmo threw a 40-yard scoring pass to James Fraser. Mira Mesa took the lead in the second quarter when Jagade Snyder scored on a 1-yard run.

Vista 28, Oceanside 0--Tom Booker rushed for 154 yards and 2 touchdowns and flanker Mark Jones ran for 167 yards and a touchdown to lead host Vista.

Poway 13, Granite Hills 7--Granite Hills quarterback Donnie Carroll ran 60 yards after a fumbled snap to give the Eagles an early 7-0 lead. It was the last time Granite Hills would score. Poway scored all its points in the third quarter to upset No. 4 Granite Hills, and Granite Hills was thwarted by two fumbled snaps in the fourth period.

Temecula Valley 14, Ramona 0--Temecula Valley scored twice in the second period for the win at Ramona. Temecula Valley quarterback Harold Jones connected with Charley Gater on a five-yard strike to open the scoring in the second quarter. Later in the period, running back Dwight Bobo scored from the one.
