PREP FOOTBALL : Damien Holds On to Take 13-7 Win Over Fullerton
Jim Irwin threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to Tim Winn in the third quarter as Damien High School held on to defeat Fullerton, 13-7, in a non-league game Friday night in Spartan Stadium at LaVerne.
Two plays after an interception by Chris Richards and a personal foul against Fullerton, Irwin threw the winning touchdown pass to Winn with 6:49 to play in the third quarter.
Fullerton started its extended drive with 8:45 left in the game, but the march was stalled when Fullerton was charged with illegal procedure on third down.
Fullerton’s only touchdown came two minutes into the second quarter when Aaron Acton threw a three-yard pass to Steve Pearson, who then pitched to Darrell Corbin, who carried the ball 52 yards for the touchdown.
Spartan running back Eric Henley, a preseason All American selection, was held to 63 yards in 19 carries. He scored Damien’s first touchdown on a four-yard run with 2:30 left in the first quarter.
Corbin led Fullerton with 96 yards in 10 carries. On defense, Steve DePhillips blocked a punt, a PAT kick and sacked the Damien field-goal holder on a fake kick.
