HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL TODAY : Thousand Oaks (2-0) vs. Canyon (2-0)
At Canyon7:30 p.m.
Because the Golden League moved to the Coastal Conference this season, Canyon may meet Thousand Oaks again in the playoffs. All that is at stake this time is Canyon’s 40-game win streak, the nation’s second-longest current streak. Canyon is ranked No. 1 in the Valley area by The Times and Thousand Oaks is No. 3. The flu has hit Canyon hard. Wide receiver Chad Zeigler and fullback Paul Chadwell have not practiced this week. Even Coach Harry Welch is sick. Tailback Lance Cross, who sat out last week’s 42-6 win over La Canada with an injured back, is expected to play. Thousand Oaks replaced injured tackle Spencer Smith with junior Greg Banks and injured quarterback Robb McKinnon with junior Steve Sisco. With teams keying on junior running back Marc Monestime, Lancer fullback Mike Moore has gained 195 yards.
Hart (1-1) vs. Alemany (0-2)
At Alemany 7:30 p.m.
Round three of perhaps the most ambitious preleague schedule in the Southern Section doesn’t figure to be any easier for Alemany. After losing to Harvard and Granada Hills, the Indians could use a breather. Instead of sympathy, they have Hart, a team itching to explode. Hart edged Mission Viejo, 14-13, last week on a post-Canyon hangover. Injuries to three defensive starters have thinned Hart’s ranks, but with Jim Bonds recovered from a knee injury and running backs Chris Hite and Andy Iacenda going full bore, Hart should score enough to offset defensive errors. Hite has gained 158 yards on 15 carries and caught 12 passes for 145 yards. Alemany plays Kennedy and Canyon the next two weeks.
Agoura (1-1) vs. Simi Valley (2-0)
At Simi Valley 7:30 p.m.
With all the attention given to new Simi Valley quarterback Todd Studer, the team’s strongest point--defense--has been somewhat overlooked. “We are playing good solid defense,” Coach Dave Murphy said. Linebackers Jeff Lujan and Eric Swenson, and defensive tackle Andy Silvestro have played especially well. Studer, who has passed for 358 yards, has been sacked only once. “Our offensive line is coming along much faster than anticipated,” Murphy said. Agoura rebounded from a one-sided loss to Newbury Park to defeat Royal, 24-21, last week. Rick Dobrowski had been alternating at quarterback, but after completing 8 of 14 passes for 146 yards against Royal, he may have won the job.
Burroughs (2-0) vs. Saugus (0-2)
At College of the Canyons 7:30 p.m.
Burroughs quarterback Jeff Barrett, a left-hander, was sensational last week against Notre Dame, completing 21 of 25 passes for 351 yards. Burroughs has a good chance of opening the Foothill League season 5-0. The Indians play Glendale and Crescenta Valley the next two weeks. “One of our goals before the season began was to start league undefeated,” Burroughs Coach Bob Dunivant said. “The kids know that it’s a real possibility. We want to be peaking right as we’re going into league.” Under rookie Coach Dave Gross, Saugus is compensating for a lack of size with plenty of passes. Quarterback Jared Snyder has completed 29 of 57 passes, but has thrown five interceptions.
Canoga Park (1-0) vs. Cleveland (1-0)
At Cleveland 8 p.m.
Albert Fann was as close to a human battering ram as a running back can be, gaining 243 yards on 28 carries in an 18-7 win over Chatsworth last week. Even on plays when the 6-2, 205-pound senior appeared to be stopped, he fell forward for three or four yards. Coach Steve Landress wanted a more balanced attack but now the game plan is Fann. “Some great teams have relied on one guy for offense,” Landress said. Canoga Park shut out El Camino Real, 7-0, last week, scoring only on a 68-yard punt return by Mike Conover. The Hunter defense was led by linebacker Brian Hoffman, who recorded 12 tackles and one sack, and defensive tackle Dave Audelo, who had seven tackles and a sack.
Chatsworth (0-1) vs. Granada Hills (1-0)
At Granada Hills 8 p.m.
Chatsworth could not stop Cleveland’s Albert Fann last week. Granada Hills has no single back of Fann’s caliber, but the threesome of Mike Davis, Khalid Ali and Jamaal Farmer combined for 253 yards rushing last week in a 33-14 win over Alemany. “I can’t imagine a team having three as good as ours,” Granada Hills Coach Darryl Stroh said. “And if Chatsworth concentrates on the run, we can open it up.” Quarterback Jeremy Leach completed 9 of 13 passes for 147 yards last week. Chatsworth quarterback Bryan Addison fumbled four snaps in his first varsity start last week, but also hit 7 of 11 passes for 100 yards and showed an ability to scramble. “Bryan is one of those guys who can turn what should be a loss into a big play,” Coach Myron Gibford said.
Reseda (1-0) vs. Monroe (0-1)
At Monroe 8 p.m.
Last week put Reseda Coach Joel Schaeffer on an emotional roller coaster. Starting quarterback Don Grant fractured his hand in a fight at school and will be out a minimum of three weeks. But fill-in Mike Lance led the Regents to a 24-7 win over Birmingham. “Mike gets the job done at a basic level,” Schaeffer said. Monroe, meanwhile, was blanked by Grant, 8-0. “We just have to execute on offense,” Coach Howard Reisbord said. Quarterback Kesa Harding, in his first varsity start, fumbled four snaps from center. Reseda, which plays in the 2-A Pac 8 League, is looking for its second straight victory over a 3-A team. “3-A means nothing to me,” Schaeffer said. “We play tougher teams in our league.”
Montclair Prep (1-1) vs. San Fernando (0-1)
At San Fernando 8 p.m.
Former Montclair Prep Coach John Hazelton scheduled San Fernando, a 4-A City Section school, to a two-year series. Last season the Mounties were pummeled, 47-7. “I don’t know why Hazelton scheduled San Fernando,” first-year Coach Pat Blackburn said. Anthony Pack and Paul Anderson combined for more than 200 yards rushing last week against a Chaminade defense full of 170-pound players. San Fernando’s defensive line averages 225 pounds. “It’s the biggest team I’ve had here,” Coach Tom Hernandez said. The Tiger wishbone attack sputtered and the team lost three fumbles last week in a 14-13 loss to Oxnard. Terry Smith, who gained 102 yards on 25 carries last week, may emerge as San Fernando’s best back.
Crespi (2-0) vs. Santa Barbara (0-2)
At Santa Barbara 7:30 p.m.
Crespi, ranked No. 2 in The Times Valley poll and seventh in the Big-Five Conference, has limited its first two opponents to minus 53 yards rushing and outscored them, 79-7. The Celts will be missing junior running back J.J. Lasley, who is out with an injured wrist. Lasley is wearing a cast but is expected to play next week against Westminster. Sophomore running back Russell White leads the Crespi offense, which has averaged 390 yards a game. White has gained 259 yards on 14 carries and has scored five touchdowns. Santa Barbara has managed just 16 points in two losses. Wide receiver Dante Robinson has been one bright spot with 8 receptions for 100 yards and one touchdown.
