LaVelle Paces Corona del Mar’s Victory
Eddie LaVelle set a course record Saturday to lead the Corona del Mar High School boys’ cross-country team to the varsity Division 1 (small schools) team title of the Costa Mesa Invitational at Tewinkle Park.
LaVelle, a sophomore, finished the three-mile race in 15:02 to break the record of 15:08, set by Corona del Mar’s Dave Anderson in 1983. The Sea Kings won Saturday’s meet with a team score of 59, followed by Costa Mesa (75) and Katella (96).
Huntington Beach won the Division 2 (large schools) meet with a team score of 70, followed by Paramount (75) and Santa Ana (124).
Kristin Harkins of La Quinta won the girls’ division with a time of 18:38 to lead the Aztecs to a second-place finish (62 points) in the Division 1 race. Newport Harbor won with a score of 39, and Estancia (121) was third.
The Ocean View girls’ team won Division 2 with a score of 19, followed by Chino (70) and Huntington Beach (95). Of the 37 schools that participated, Newport Harbor was the meet’s sweepstakes winner with a combined boys and girls’ team score of 177.
