HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL : Cathedral Gets Only 11 Offensive Plays in 1st Half Against Stingy Bell-Jeff, 23-0
Bell-Jeff thoroughly stifled Cathedral’s single-wing offense to record a 23-0 victory in the Santa Fe League opener for both teams Saturday at Cathedral.
Limiting Cathedral to just 26 total yards, Bell-Jeff’s defense dropped Cathedral tailbacks David Bautista and Javier Lopez seven times for a minus-38 yards and intercepted three passes.
“We wanted to contain them and force them to run,” said Bell-Jeff Coach Doug Woodlief.
Bell-Jeff (4-0) had little trouble with its own running attack. Controlling the ball with running backs Stuart Amrheim and Dave Lockwood, Bell-Jeff rolled up 100 yards rushing, allowing Cathedral only 11 offensive plays in the first half.
Matt Woodlief’s 20-yard field goal in the first quarter gave Bell-Jeff the lead for good. Lockwood, who finished with 49 yards on 18 carries, added a touchdown on a one-yard plunge with 32 seconds left to give Bell-Jeff a 9-0 lead at the half.
Bell-Jeff quarterback Keith Fitzgerald and wide receiver Billy Brockway, a pass combination since the two were 4-year-old flag football teammates, hooked up on a 34-yard pass play to set up another score early in the third quarter. Lockwood scored his second touchdown three plays later on a 3-yard run.
