FALL SPORTS HIGHLIGHTS : CSUN Soccer Team Beats USC, 3-0

Joey Kirk scored twice to lead the Cal State Northridge soccer team to a 3-0 exhibition victory over USC on Saturday night at CSUN.

Teammate Rodney Batt scored the other goal for the Matadors, ranked sixth in the NCAA Division II, and Mike McAndrew added two assists.

The victory over USC, a club team, will not count toward CSUN’s 6-2-1 overall record.

Northridge will begin defense of its California Collegiate Athletic Assn. title on Wednesday, when it travels to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

CYCLING

Kevin Wright of Northridge and Scott Burden of Reseda each won their respective age divisions at the Western Junior Track Championships at the Encino Velodrome on Saturday.

Wright defeated Doug Green of Portland and Eric Donahoe of Mission Viejo in the 12- to 13-year-old division. Burden edged Troy Donahoe, Eric’s older brother, in the 14- to 15-year-old division. Both finals were 750-meter sprints.

In the Senior Men’s Omnium, Matt Chambers of Chicago took the first-day lead over Michael Gamm of Montrose in point standings heading into today’s finals. Christian Nass of Norway is third.

In women’s sprint competition, Janie Eickoff of Los Alamitos defeated Meg Berry of San Diego and Robin Coon of San Diego defeated Heather Reid of Santa Barbara.

WATER POLO

Citrus College def. Valley, 14-13--Citrus won the Citrus Water Polo Tournament with the victory. Valley (5-6) had advanced to the championship with victories over Pasadena, 13-11, and Chaffey, 12-10.

Valley freshman John Wormington scored a team-high 11 goals during the tournament. Sophomore teammates Casey Gannon and Adrian Spiga scored seven and six goals.

Crespi def. Santa Monica, 14-12--David Scott and Chappie DeHaven led Crespi High to a third-place finish in the South Bay Water Polo Tournament at El Segundo High. Scott scored a team high 18 goals in the tournament and DeHaven added 13.

Crespi defeated Santa Monica in the third-place match.

The Celts had defeated Hoover (7-5) and Fountain Valley (8-7) in the first two rounds before losing to El Segundo (10-7).
