STATISTICS WATCH : Canyon’s Streak Becomes Nation’s Longest at 42

Canyon High, with 42 straight wins, owns the longest current winning streak in the nation after East St. Louis, Ill., which had a 44-game streak, lost to Granite City, Ill., 17-14, last Saturday. Canyon began the season with the third-longest current streak. John Curtis Christian of River Ridge, La., had a 43-game streak end three weeks ago. Baker, Fla., a 1-A school of 200 students, is second in the nation with a 41-game winning streak.

Add Winning Streaks: Temple City holds the Southern Section record at 46 (1969-73). Cardinal Newman of Santa Rosa set the state record with 47 (1972-77). The national record of 76 was set by Douglass of Oklahoma City (1949-56).

Passing: Jeremy Leach’s passing is a big reason for Granada Hills’ success. Leach has completed 32 of 48 passes (66.7%) with no interceptions. . . . Rick Dobrowski (199) and Scott Heflin (104) combined for 303 yards for Agoura last week, but the quarterbacks weren’t enough to offset Harvard’s 367 yards rushing.

Rushing: Russell White of Crespi gained 158 yards on 11 carries against Westminster and had his average per carry go down from 16.1 to 15.6.. . . . After gaining only seven yards in Chatsworth’s first game, Chancellor running back Spence Durham has rushed for 299 yards the last two weeks.

Scoring: Dominic Sandifer of Harvard has kicked field goals of 57, 51, 47, and 31 yards. He also had a 50-yarder last season and has kicked a 62-yarder in practice.

Defense: Reseda defensive back Sam Edwards had three of his team’s six interceptions of Poly quarterback Joey Speakes on Friday in Reseda’s 24-7 win. . . . Burroughs defensive end Mike Herron set a school record with seven sacks against Glendale. . . . Vic Topper has intercepted a pass in each of Westlake’s four games. . . . Tackle John Maio of Westlake has 51 tackles in four games.
