FALL SPORTS HIGHLIGHTS : Westlake Beats Royal in Volleyball

Outside hitter Dana Simone returned from an ankle injury to help the Westlake High girls volleyball team to a 15-11, 15-7, 16-14 victory Tuesday night over Royal.

Simone had 10 kills and teammate Tristin Graham had nine for Westlake, ranked No. 1 in the Southern Section 2-A poll. Teammate Karen Margozewitz set flawlessly for the Westlake offense.

Westlake, which finished second to Nordhoff, the No. 1 ranked 3-A Division team, in the final of the Calabasas tournament, is 6-0 in league, 7-3 overall. Royal, which was the top-ranked preseason 2-A team, has three Marmonte League losses.

Louisville def. Notre Dame, 15-6, 15-1, 15-3--Louisville’s Tina Kohler had 16 kills on 17 attempts, and middle blocker Lisa Fouts added six kills. Laurie Jones had 12 blocks for Notre Dame (7-3, 1-2 in league). Louisville is 6-3, 3-0 in league.

Chaminade def. Bell-Jeff, 15-4, 15-7, 8-15, 15-6--Anna Suarez and Kathy Hayes registered seven kills each for Chaminade which is 6-0, 3-0 in the San Fernando Valley League. Bell-Jeff is 0-3.

Thousand Oaks def. Channel Islands, 15-2, 15-9, 15-1--Kristin McIntyre led the serving barrage with five aces, and teammate Amy Chellevold added three aces for Thousand Oaks (6-4, 3-3 in the Marmonte League). Channel Islands is 0-6.

Newbury Park def. Simi Valley, 4-15, 15-12, 15-13, 14-16, 15-12--Camille Mitchell had 17 kills to lead Newbury Park in an upset victory over Simi Valley, ranked No. 4 in the Southern Section 2-A poll. Debbie Powers had 15 kills and Karen Austin had 12 blocks for Newbury Park.

Village Christian def. Montclair Prep, 15-3, 15-8, 15-8--Karin Yoho had seven kills and six digs for Village Christian. Montclair Prep’s Cheryl Conly, a second-team All-Southern Section selection last season, will be out for the remainder of the season due to illness.

Burroughs def. Alhambra, 10-15, 15-10, 15-7, 15-8--Debbie Penney and Traci Tilton each had 14 kills for Burroughs (8-2, 3-0).

Calabasas def. Santa Paula, 15-2, 15-5, 15-13--Sandi Thomsen had seven kills and Tracey Gonzalez added nine digs and seven kills for Calabasas (5-2, 1-1). Santa Paula is 0-2 in league.

Nordhoff def. Agoura, 15-5, 15-1, 15-12--Jolene Clemens and Dawn Krenik each had six kills against Nordhoff, the No. 1 ranked team in the Southern Section 3-A Division. Agoura is 6-2 overall, and 2-1 in the Frontier League. Nordhoff is 3-0 in league. OTHER SCORES
