Woodbridge Remains Undefeated by Beating Estancia

Senior David Townsend scored one touchdown and threw for another Thursday night as unbeaten Woodbridge High School defeated Estancia, 26-0, in a nonleague game at Newport Harbor High.

Townsend, who rushed for 80 yards in 15 carries, put Woodbridge (5-0) ahead, 7-0, when he scored on a five-yard run with 5:23 left in the first quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Townsend took a handoff from quarterback Eric Brougher and threw a 79-yard touchdown pass to Derrick Odum, giving Woodbridge a 26-0 lead.

Woodbridge used John Yurkovich at quarterback in the first half and Brougher in the second half. Yurkovich completed 5 of 10 passes for 57 yards, but was intercepted twice. Brougher completed 2 of 5 passes for 10 yards.

After Townsend’s first touchdown, the Warriors extended their lead to 10-0 on a 23-yard field goal by Keith Boothroyd with 5:44 left in the second quarter.

Woodbridge added a safety when a snap went over the head of Estancia punter James Pacot and out of the end zone with 6:30 left in the third quarter.

The Warriors made it 19-0 when Brougher threw a four-yard touchdown pass to Mike Babyakwith 3:43 left in the third quarter.

Estancia (0-5) was held to 38 yards rushing. Quarterback Todd Brooks completed 14 of 23 passes for 98 yards and was intercepted once.

Estancia’s most best chance to score came with one second left when a pass by Brooks fell incomplete in the Warrior end zone.

Estancia also moved the ball to the Woodbridge 28-yard line in the first quarter, but the drive stalled.
