Laguna Hills Is Leveled by Mission Viejo

Mission Viejo High School rolled to a 47-0 nonleague win over Laguna Hills Friday night in front of 1,500 fans at Mission Viejo.

Senior running back Darrin Sweazy rushed for 66 yards to pace the Diablos to a 26-0 halftime lead. Even though he sat out most of the second half, Sweazy finished with 108 yards on 14 carries.

Seazy opened the scoring in the first quarter with a two-yard run with 8:09 left. Danny Reed kicked the extra point giving Mission Viejo (2-5) a 7-0 lead.

Laguna Hills made a comeback attempt more difficult by fumbling the next kickoff. Mission Viejo recovered on the Hawks’ 29 and made it 13-0 when Rick Angle caught a 29-yard pass from quarterback Tony Arnone.

Mission Viejo built a 20-0 lead in the second quarter on a eight-yard run by John Burns.

The Hawks took the ensuing kickoff and controlled the ball for more than five minutes only to have the drive stall on the Mission Viejo 29.

The Diablos took possession and drove for another score.

With 2:10 left in the half, Burns ran through the middle for five yards and fumbled the ball into the end zone but teammate Reed bounced on the ball for another Mission Viejo score, and the Diablos led 26-0.

In the third quarter, Sweazy scored on a 10-yard run, Peter Moses caught a 22-yard pass from reserve quarterback John Moses and running back Gary Clevenger ran seven yards for a third touchdown.

The Hawks only scoring threat came midway through the fourth quarter. Laguna Hills (1-4) drove to the Mission Viejo seven but an interception ended the drive.

Laguna Hills opens Pacific Coast League play Friday against Costa Mesa and Mission Viejo opens South Coast League play at Irvine.
