After a quick start, the Cal Lutheran soccer team has struggled in recent weeks. The Kingsmen lost identical 1-0 decisions to Fresno Pacific two weeks ago and then Wednesday to Westmont, the seventh-ranked team in NAIA.

Kingsmen Coach Gary Jensen said his team is hurting offensively. Leading scorer Robert Marti (10 goals and six assists) has been slowed because of a bruised thigh. “His injury fatigues the muscle easily,” Jensen said. “He can only play about half a game all out. Without his speed, what he can do is really limited.”

Forward Bjornor Eide tore a muscle in his leg before the Fresno Pacific game and is probably out for the season.

The Kingsmen (7-3-1) play host to Azusa Pacific (7-4) today at 11 a.m.

When the Cal Lutheran football team plays Cal State Northridge today, the Kingsmen will be without linebacker Terry Rowe, who tore ligaments in his left knee a week ago against Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Rowe, who was named NAIA defensive player of the week for his performance against San Francisco State last month, will miss the rest of the season. He underwent surgery Friday in Phoenix, Ariz.

CLU defensive back Oscar Williams will also miss the CSUN game because of a hip injury.

Chris Schallert of Canoga Park will run in the Twin-Cities Marathon in Minneapolis-St. Paul, Min., on Sunday.

Schallert, 27, a graduate of North Hollywood High and Cal State Northridge, finished eighth in the Los Angeles Marathon in March.

Schallert said he hopes to run the course in 2 hours, 15 minutes. “I’m feeling really good,” he said in a telephone interview from Minneapolis. “I’ve backed way off in my training and I think I’m capable of running 2:15.”

Schallert, who will be competing for the Gardena Valley Runners, ran a personal best of 2:16:15 in 1984.

The 26-mile, 385-yard course starts in Minneapolis and finishes in St. Paul. The top three finishers will qualify for the World Championships in September at Rome, Italy.
