College Roundup : Entzinger Wins Race

Bobby Entzinger of the Southern California College cross-country team won a four-way meet Saturday at King’s College in Briarcliff Manor, N.Y. Entzinger covered the 5.2-mile course in 28:15 in a field of 34 runners.

The Vanguard men’s team (5-12) beat Mercy College and lost to State University of New York, Maritime and King’s College.

The SCC women’s team (13-8) beat three of four opponents in the meet. They defeated Mount St. Vincent’s, College of New Rochelle and Mercy College, but were beaten by King’s College. The Vanguards’ top performers were Shannon Sheldrew, who was sixth, running the 3.2-mile course in 21:24, and Renee Crews, seventh in 22:38. The Vanguards’ next competition is the Golden State Athletic Conference championships at Pacific College in Fresno Saturday.

In men’s soccer:

Cal State Northridge 2, Chapman 0--Juniors Mike Harvey and Thor Lee scored to lead Northridge to the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. victory at Chapman.

Harvey’s goal came at the 39th minute. Lee scored on a header four minutes into the second half. Chapman is 1-1 in conference and 7-5-1 overall. Northridge is 2-0 and 8-2-1.

In women’s soccer:

St. Mary’s 2, UC Irvine 0--The Gaels (6-3-1) won the nonconference match at Irvine on two goals by freshman Desi Engle. UCI, which dropped to 6-4-1, hosts another nonconference match today at 3 p.m. against UC San Diego.

In nonconference college women’s volleyball action:

Pacific Christian College 3, Caltech 1--Center hitter Jenny Fish led PCC to a 15-10, 15-0, 10-15, 15-2 victory against the Beavers at Caltech. PCC (6-3) hosts the Beavers in a rematch in Fullerton Tuesday at 8 p.m.

In cross-country:

Junior Mike Kennedy ran a 4-mile course in 22:36 to lead the Chapman men’s cross-country victory over Cal State San Bernardino at Santiago Oaks Regional Park Saturday.

Kennedy’s time was six seconds short of the course record. Chapman’s Ray Campbell finished second with a 23:48.

The Chapman women’s team split its three-mile race, defeating Southern Utah State and losing to San Bernardino. Chapman’s Carla Figueroa finished third overall.

In community college water polo:

Golden West 12, Saddleback 7--Scott Larson scored five goals to lead the visiting Rustlers (12-3). Craig Douglass, Gary Tichy and Jason Jeffries had two goals each for Golden West. Eric Shore scored twice for Saddleback (9-2-1).
