Chaminade 9, Salesian 0--Chaminade Coach Rich Montanio said he made Saturday’s game against Salesian an “everyone plays” affair because every player on the team had been working hard in practice for the last three weeks.
The Eagles almost forced him to reconsider, barely escaping with the win to improve their record to 2-2-1 overall and 2-0 in the Santa Fe Leasgue.
“I’m very disappointed,” Montanio said. “We’ve been improving every week and we went right back to what we were doing the first week.”
Montanio was displeased because the Eagles were called for 90 yards in penalties, had a touchdown nullified by a penalty and fumbled the ball five times.
Midway through the fourth quarter running back Sean Burwell, who gained 172 yards on 22 carries, dove for a touchdown from the one-yard out only to have the play nullified because Chaminade was penalized for having too many players on the field.
The defense put the Eagles’ first points on the board in the third quarter when linebacker Scott Chandler tackled Salesian punter Joe Rodriguez in the end zone for a safety.
The Eagles scored again early in the fourth quarter when Burwell caught a 21-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Dave Morrison. The extra point conversion by Doug Marconet made the score 9-0. C--Safety, punter tackled in end zone.
