1,200 Acres Burned Near Mt. St. Helens
Three forest fires whipped up by unseasonably hot weather and strong winds by Sunday had burned nearly 1,200 acres of rugged timberland near the Mt. St. Helens volcano in southwestern Washington state.
To the south, about 30 miles east of Estacada, Ore., firefighters battled a wind-whipped brush fire that had threatened virgin timber and a Bonneville Power Administration power line in the Mt. Hood National Forest.
The largest blaze in Washington was estimated to cover about 900 acres nine miles west of the volcano. It was keeping about 600 firefighters busy, and was 10% contained, the Forest Service said.
The Oregon fire, southeast of Portland, burned 30 acres of brush before it was contained Sunday.
