Community College Roundup : Golden West Upsets El Camino, 2-1

Pat Penner and Paul Smith each scored first-half goals Tuesday night to lead the Golden West College soccer team to a 2-1 upset of El Camino in a South Coast Conference match at Huntington Beach.

Golden West goalie Tim Bontrager had 19 saves and shut out the Warriors in the second half, as defending state champion El Camino suffered its first loss since 1984. John Timko scored for the Warriors.

The Rustlers are 1-1 in conference, 6-4 overall. El Camino fell to 1-1 and 9-1.

In Orange Empire Conference action:

Cypress 5, Victor Valley 2--Abraham Shehadeh scored three goals to lead the Chargers at Victor Valley. David Chee and Cale Coelho also scored for Cypress (1-2, 2-6-1).

In Orange Empire Conference water polo action:

Orange Coast 19, Palomar 9--Eric Keller and Mike Bunge each scored five goals to lead the Pirates at Orange Coast. The Pirates, ranked second in the state, are 7-0 in conference, 16-1 overall.

Saddleback 19, Grossmont 12--Eric Long scored seven goals to lead the Gauchos at Grossmont. Saddleback is 6-1 in conference, 10-2-1 overall.

In South Coast Conference water polo action:

Golden West 22, Fullerton 5--Alan Buchanan scored five goals, and Gary Tichy, Scott Larsen and Arn Van Dyke each added three for the Rustlers (4-1, 13-3) at Fullerton.
