FALL SPORTS HIGHLIGHTS : Newbury Park Defeats Westlake for First Time in Volleyball

Newbury Park High’s girls volleyball team defeated Westlake for the first time in history, posting a 10-15, 16-14, 9-15, 15-11, 15-7 upset of the Southern Section Division 2-A’s No. 2 team Thursday.

“We were jumping up down afterward,” Newbury Park Coach Joe Wortmann said. “We had the biggest crowd we have ever had and the whole school is going nuts.”

About 400 people watched as sophomores Camille Mitchell and Marlo Cormier combined for 91 passing assists. The duo was responsible for every Newbury Park assist in the match.

“They’re both sophomores,” Wortmann said. “I have enough confidence in them to cover the entire court and that makes an incredible difference in our passing game.”

On the receiving end, senior Karen Austin had 13 kills. Sophomore Shannon Mutch set 125 balls as the Panthers won their fifth straight Marmonte League match. Westlake is 6-2 in league and 7-5 overall. Newbury Park is 5-3 and 8-4 overall.

Said Wortmann: “I think the team is beginning to realize that they are very good and even though we are young, that we are contenders for a CIF berth. After five straight games they’re beginning to believe that they are good as I think they are.”

Notre Dame def. St. Genevieve, 15-12, 12-15, 5-15, 15-9, 15-5--Senior Tammy Silva had 9 kills and Lisa Barbot had 12 service points, including 3 aces, to lead Notre Dame (3-3) to a San Fernando Valley League win.

Calabasas def. Agoura 12-15, 15-12, 15-12, 15-5--Tracey Gonzales had 17 kills and 10 blocks, and Sandi Thomsen had 19 kills and 7 digs to lead Calabasas to a Frontier League win at Calabasas. The teams are tied for second place behind Nordhoff. Calabasas is 3-2, 7-3 overall. Agoura is 3-2.

L.A. Baptist def. Western Christian, 15-7, 15-5, 6-15, 15-10--Laurie Evans and Kendra Frazier led L.A. Baptist in the Alpha League match at Western Christian. Evans had 13 kills, and Frazier contributed 5 blocks and 10 kills. L.A. Baptist is 8-2, 9-3 overall.

Cleveland def. Monroe, 15-2, 15-7--Gina Martinez had seven digs to lead Cleveland (3-1) in a North Valley League game. Samantha Goldfarb had three kills, and Sharon Kim had four service aces.

Chaminade def. Alemany, 15-10, 15-10, 16-14--Chaminade bounced back from its loss to Louisville Tuesday night with a convincing San Fernando Valley League victory. Middle-hitters Kathy Hayes and Anna Suarez led Chaminade (5-1, 8-1 overall) with eight and six kills, respectively.

Thousand Oaks def. Camarillo, 15-7, 15-9, 12-15, 8-15, 15-8--Julie Chellevold had 27 kills and 6 blocks and setter Beth Welch had 13 kills to lead Thousand Oaks (6-3, 9-4 overall) to the Marmonte League victory.

Village Christian def. L.A. Lutheran 15-5, 15-4, 15-13, 10-15, 15-11--Karin Yoho had 24 kills and 7 blocks, and Heather Hepburn had 21 kills and 6 aces to lead Village Christian (9-1, 14-2 overall) in an Alpha League game at Village Christian.

Canoga Park def. Reseda 15-7, 15-7--Canoga Park is 1-2 in the West Valley League and Reseda is 0-3.

WATER POLO

Burbank 13, Burroughs 11--Burbank held off a late attack by Burroughs in overtime to win its first match of the season. Burroughs rallied in the Foothill League match with three goals in the fourth period to tie the game at 10. In the first of two three-minute overtimes, Burbank scored two goals.

Burroughs’ Scott Weerts, who had four goals, scored one in the first overtime to keep the Indians alive. But Burbank scored a goal and shut out Burroughs in the final overtime to hang on to the lead. Burbank is 1-3 and Burroughs is 2-2, 2-6 overall.

Harvard 12, Nordhoff 7--Fred Brende scored four goals and Ivan El-Sayed scored three to lead Harvard to its fifth straight win. Harvard is 5-0, Nordhoff drops to 1-6.

BOYS CROSS-COUNTRY

Cathedral def. Harvard, 22-34--John Trafecanty set a course record in 14:41 to help Cathedral improve its Santa Fe League record to 6-0. Harvard is 3-3.

Burbank def. Alhambra, 18-51--Brothers Todd and Al Lewis of Burbank finished first and second in the Foothill League meet at Alhambra Golf Course. Sophomore Todd Lewis ran 14:35 for the 2.8-mile course while Al, a junior, ran 14:46.

Sophomore Robert Lopez (15:08) and junior Mike Kemp (15:37) finished fourth and fifth for Burbank (2-2).

Notre Dame def. Calabasas, 26-29--Mike Glaze of Notre Dame (2-5) set a three-mile course record of 15:21 in the nonleague meet at Notre Dame. Glaze’s effort lowered his previous course best of 15:48. Jordan Fisher of Calabasas finished second in 16:15.

Burroughs def. Schurr, 20-35--Javier Primera led Burroughs (3-1, 5-1 overall) in the Foothill League meet at Griffith Park. Primera won the three-mile race in 15:29. Teammates Mike Smith (16:25), Charlie Peebles (16:45) and Bob McIntire finished third, fourth and fifth.

Hart def. San Gabriel, 16-47--Bobby Bans and Frank Flores led Hart to its fourth consecutive Foothill League win. Bans’ 16:26 effort over the three-mile course narrowly defeated Flores, who ran 16:34. Teammates Don Paddy (third in 16:42), Stephen Lepken (fourth in 17:02) and David Rizzo (sixth in 17:15) rounded out the Hart scoring.

Kennedy def. Banning, 25-33--Antonio Duran and Eduardo Solorzano of Kennedy (2-0) finished 1-2 in the nonleague meet at Pierce College. Duran ran 16:04 over the three-mile course while Solorzano clocked 16:08. Teammates Dimitri Lagos (16:43) and Daryl Delavega (17:03) finished fourth and fifth.

GIRLS CROSS-COUNTRY

Burbank def. Alhambra, 18-37--Nicole Jimenez and Renee Leonard finished 1-2 to lead Burbank (1-3) to its first Foothill League victory of the season.

Kennedy def. Banning, 15-49--Kim Crongeyer’s victory led Kennedy to its second victory of the season in the nonleague meet.
