Roundup : Granite Hills Wins Fifth Straight

Granite Hills dominated the entire game to beat Valhalla, 43-6, Friday night in a nonleague game at Granite Hills. It was Granite Hills’ fifth straight win.

Granite Hills was in control from the start as Valhalla quarterback Joe Crisci threw interceptions on his first two possessions, the latter for a 25-yard touchdown play by linebacker Scott Weber to give Granite Hills a 10-0 lead in the first quarter.

The biggest difference came as Granite Hills’ wishbone, consisting of Robert Padillo, Tom Vardell and Ricky Stauffer, gained 386 yards total offense, 226 rushing, 160 passing.

Five Valhalla running backs totalled only 52 yards.

Padillo scored on a 64-yard run on Granite Hills’ first play of the second half. Five minutes later, quarterback Donnie Carroll, who completed 8 of 17 passes for 273 yards, hit Kevin Robbins on a 32-yard scoring strike, giving Granite Hills a 30-0 lead.

Valhalla is 3-3.

Chula Vista 14, Grossmont 13--Mark Stillwell scored on a quarterback sneak with just under three minutes remaining to pull Grossmont within one point, but threw incomplete on the two-point conversion try as No. 3-ranked Chula Vista (6-0) held on for the win at Grossmont. Rusty Beatty scored on a four-yard run in the first quarter to give Grossmont (2-3-1) a 7-0 lead. Chula Vista came back to take a 14-7 lead on a touchdown run by Sione Fehoko midway through the fourth quarter.

PALOMAR

Orange Glen 31, Mount Carmel 6--Duffy Daugherty completed 17 of 33 passes for 244 yards and two touchdowns to lead No. 6-ranked Orange Glen (1-1, 5-1) to a home win over Mount Carmel (1-2, 2-4). Orange Glen led 10-0 at halftime when John Tejcek returned the second-half kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown for Mount Carmel. But Daugherty threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Matt Fiorello in the third quarter and a 71-yard scoring pass to Fiorello in the fourth quarter to ensure Orange Glen’s win.

San Dieguito 16, Poway 7--Chad Embrey’s 27-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter put ninth-ranked San Dieguito (2-0, 5-1) ahead to stay in the win at Poway. Brett Ward, who connected with Tim Bray on a 25-yard touchdown pass for the final score, completed 15 of 38 passes for 130 yards. Mark Horowitz’s two-yard touchdown run gave San Dieguito the early 6-0 lead but Greg Warden’s seven-yard scoring run and Brian Ashworth’s extra point in the second quarter gave Poway (0-3, 3-3) a 7-6 lead.

San Marcos 27, Carlsbad 7--Jim Jennings rushed for 144 yards on 19 carries, including an 80-yard run for a touchdown on the first play from scrimmage, to lead San Marcos (3-0, 3-2-1) to the win at home over Carlsbad (2-1, 4-2). Jennings also scored on a two-yard run in the fourth quarter to snap a 7-7 tie. Vaughn Webb, who finished with 110 yards on six carries, scored on a 78-yard run to give San Marcos a 21-7 lead.

CITY EASTERN

Point Loma 13, Morse 13--George Jackson returned a punt 44 yards for a touchdown with 2:48 remaining in the game and Melvin Maxwell kicked the extra point to give Morse (0-0-1, 3-2-1) a tie at Point Loma (0-0-1, 4-1-1). Larry Maxey’s 19-yard touchdown run gave Morse a 6-0 lead. Point Loma took the lead in the second half with touchdowns on a 60-yard pass from quarterback Ace Logan to Bob Brasher and a 1-yard run by Logan. A tiebreaker was played, to be used only to settle ties in the standings at the end of the season. Point Loma won the tiebreaker, 14-13.

Mira Mesa 10, Madison 8--Andre Falkquay returned the second-half kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown to break a scoreless tie and lead Mira Mesa (1-0, 4-2) to the win at Madison (0-1, 3-3). Following a blocked punt, Steve Baird kicked a 37-yard field goal for a 10-0 lead. Madison scored on a 21-yard pass from Mike Maine to Gerald Harris late in the third quarter. With four minutes left, Falkquay intercepted a pass by Maurice Jackson in the end zone to end Madison’s final threat.

Serra 10, Patrick Henry 6--Serra (1-0, 2-4) recovered three Patrick Henry fumbles and blocked two punts for the win at Patrick Henry (0-1, 0-6). Serra quarterback Chris Robison completed 10 of 14 passes for 107 yards, including a 1-yard scoring toss to Matt Taliea in the second quarter. Patrick Henry’s Allen Smith scored on a 95-yard kickoff return with 5:23 to play.

CITY CENTRAL

Lincoln 55, Christian 6-- Marcus Hopkins ran for 158 yards and four touchdowns to lead second-ranked Lincoln (1-0, 6-0) to the win at home. Lincoln quarterback Keith Mitchell injured his ankle in the second quarter and was replaced by Freddie Stokes, who completed 11 of 17 passes for 155 yards and a touchdown to Patrick Rowe. In addition to catching six passes for 89 yards, Rowe returned a kickoff 91 yards for a touchdown. Christian is 0-1, 2-4.

Hoover 34, San Diego 0--Quarterback Mike Walker ran for two touchdowns and running back Leon Golston scored twice as Hoover (1-0, 5-1) overcame six turnovers to beat visiting San Diego (0-1, 2-4). Golston scored the first touchdown of the game on a 12-yard run in the second quarter. After Walker ran nine yards for a score, Hoover added to its lead on a seven-yard pitch-and-go play from Walker to John Roots to Golston. Hoover scored its final touchdown on Ryan Lafitte’s 16-yard interception return.

CITY WESTERN

Mission Bay 7, Clairemont 0--Earnest Johnson scored on a five-yard run midway through the second quarter and Mission Bay’s defense made it stand. Mission Bay (1-0, 2-4) held Clairemont (0-1, 0-6) to zero yards passing and only two completions and safety Charles Frey intercepted two passes. Johnson was leading ground gainer with 72 yards in 21 carries.

La Jolla 10, Kearny 6--Bing Manning scored on a one-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter to lift La Jolla (1-0, 5-1) to a road win over Kearny (0-1, 2-4). Hoochie Osborne had scored on a four-yard run midway through the second quarter to give Kearny a 6-3 halftime lead.

SOUTH BAY

Southwest 17, Mar Vista 0--In the second half, Panapa Finau ran 19 yards for a touchdown and Johnny Walker caught a 2-yard touchdown pass from Richard Delano for Southwest (1-0, 3-3). Visiting Southwest held Mar Vista (0-1, 1-4-1) to 109 yards of offense and forced four turnovers.
