L.A. Baptist 10, Montclair Prep 7--It has been a long time coming for L.A. Baptist, but it finally got the taste of victory over Alpha League rival Montclair Prep.

The Knights (3-3, 2-1 in league), winless against the Mounties in five years of league play, squeaked out a win in a California tie-breaker at Monroe High.

Montclair Prep, which won a tie-breaker last week, suffered a fumble by running back Jamal Swinton after a hard hit by L.A. Baptist’s Roman Jariabeck on the Mounties’ second play in overtime.

The Knights’ Mike Guthrie, who narrowly missed a go-ahead field goal with 14 seconds left in regulation, fell on the loose ball to secure the victory.

“This is better than anything,” Guthrie said. “Roman made a great stick, and the ball landed right at my feet.”

Montclair Prep (3-3, 2-1 in league) won the overtime toss and gave L.A. Baptist the first four plays. The Mounties pushed L.A. Baptist back 17 yards on the Knights’ first three overtime plays, but Mike Vanderhorst connected on a 37-yard field goal that proved to be the game-winner.
